Why Are So Many Republicans With No Chance Running for President? (Thinks only 3 are contenders)
Slate ^ | May 21, 2014. | Jamelle Bouie

N o one will blame you if you can’t keep track of the Republican presidential field. It’s huge. If you count declared candidates, prospectives, and announced aspirants, you have 18 people from across the Republican ideological spectrum: Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. Lindsey Graham, Rick Santorum, Gov. Chris Christie, Gov. Bobby Jindal, Gov. John Kasich, Gov. Rick Snyder, Gov. Scott Walker, Jeb Bush, Jim Gilmore, Mike Huckabee, George Pataki, Rick Perry, Ben Carson, Donald Trump, and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina. The field is so large that news networks have put limits on who can join the debates. Fox News, for example, will invite only candidates who placed in the top 10 of an average of national polls. Likewise, CNN will hold two debates: one for top-tier candidates, and one for the bottom tier. (One possible effect of this? Underdog candidates will pull every stunt they can to get onstage.)

Of this gaggle of candidates, however, just three—Bush, Walker, and Rubio—are contenders. Alone among their peers, they have the cash, the elite backing, and the grassroots support needed to win the nomination.

But if that’s true—if just a few people have a shot at actual success—then why is the field so crowded? Why are so many Republicans—especially those who have no chance—running for president?

Some of this is structural. In 2008, Sen. John McCain—the runner-up in 2000—was the “next man in line” for the nomination. In 2012 it was Mitt Romney, who sat through a year of one-hit wonders—Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, and eventually Santorum—before clearing the field and taking the prize. This year is different. Santorum, the 2012 runner-up, is anathema to party elites and doesn’t have a dedicated base in the Republican Party....

The GOPe strategy to get Jeb Bush installed is to surround him with weak recycled rejects. The conservative vote will be split six ways from Sunday, while the GOPe loads Jeb up with the serious money and brokers all the big voting blocks behind the scenes.

The rich and powerful that run this nation installed Obama and now they are going to install Jeb. Between now and November 2016, I will be subjected to 1000 posts by conservatives who think their pet conservative has a snowball’s chance in hell of being the GOP presidential nominee.

Jeb is out next president. Get over it.

Other than Democrats who vote in open primaries, what comprises Bush's grass-roots support?

Actually I expect the Final Four to be Cruz, Walker, Rubio and Bush. One of those four will be the next President of The United States.

Do you really think the left wants to see Cruz as our candidate?

They are terrified of any democrat debating Cruz. They know he will wipe them out.

Here’s my take on it. Its five minutes til midnight in the Democratic Socialist States of America. One more mediocre RINO president and we are done.

Lets give the guy a little slack. We all bash republicans on FR. And why not? These feckless quislings so richly deserve our disdain. They are trading our country out from under us as we speak. Even Ted Cruz is voting for the trade bill. WTF? I am beyond ticked. How do you feel about it? I’ll bet you are not happy.

I say if Trump wants to run let him run. Let him speak. People will decide what they think about him. Crikes we are likely going to have to endure Lindseed Graham and Huckabee and God knows who else why not Trump? At least he will keep these weak spined traitors honest.

Republicans have made a laughingstock out of themselves with no assist from Trump or the rest of us.

Only one of them would make me hesitate to vote in the general election.

No. They couldn’t dig up dirt on him and there’s no October surprise. The leftards are either for Graham or Rubio. Whomever has the most skeletons AND as liberal as they are, they’ll prop him up. Rubio fits the bill.

I'd agree about Walker and Rubio but when it comes to Bush III - BS. Bush isn't much of a contender. I'd argue that Cruz and even Kasich and Paul are more of a contender than Bush.

To answer their question, so-called “long-shots” actually do win. Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were not considered to be frontrunners at the beginning of their campaigns. But I’d also add that several of them are more likely than not running for a VP slot.

I would say the six with the best chance of going somewhere in the debates and the primaries--i.e., being serious candidates--are, in alphabetical order, Bush, Cruz, Kasich, Paul, Rubio, and Walker.

(I don't think Paul has a realistic chance of getting the nomination, though; the apple hasn't fallen far enough away from the tree.)

Since the democrats must create “books” on each of the candidates at great expense to them. I just smile each time another person enters the race. Just imagine all the effort it takes and staff!

It also emphasizes that GOP has a long deep bench while. DNC has only one scared aging hag!

I’d. Like to see them run as a team with many accepting cabinet positions before the election.
I know many would like to see Cruz as president but he knows the constitution so well he would make a strong AG. Carson cleaning up the medical area. PAUL — treasury (audit) Palin — energy. etc etc. The only one i don’t want to see as president is Bush

I think the GOPe is worried about Bush, IMO Rubio will be the GOPe pick, the elites are terrified by Cruz.
