Donald Trump’s terrible night in Colorado exemplifies his campaign’s Achilles’ heel
The Washington Post's The Fix ^ | April 8, 2016 | Philip Bump

Posted on 04/09/2016 2:48:56 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The assumption for months was that everything would fall into place. That there was no need to really dig in, that the outcome was obvious. And then, too late, it became clear that this optimism was unfounded. Or maybe not too late, but late enough in the process to mean that folks would have to scramble. And now everything is up in the air.

The paragraph above describes the Republican establishment’s attitude about Donald Trump’s candidacy, obviously. But it also describes Trump’s push for the nomination itself.

From the moment he stepped onto that escalator on Trump Tower until about a month ago, Trump’s assumption was that he could power his way to the nomination through sheer force of will. That the scene when he strolled through the Iowa State Fair, pulling people into a tight cluster around him as he moved through the crowd, would work at an electoral level as well. And, despite the skepticism of the establishment (and myself), it nearly did. With remarkably little effort beyond bopping around the country in his private jet, Trump vaulted into the lead and stayed there.

But that strategy has hit its limit, thanks mostly to Ted Cruz’s dogged campaign efforts....

Wanna bet?

The entire Cruz campaign is now sold out, to the GOPe.

All of it.

I was trying to think of who in the GOPe *hasn't* endorsed Cruz. Can't come up with anyone. Cruz has the backing of the open borders groups like Club For Growth. The open border financiers like Mercer. Graham, Jeb, Romney. Goldman Sachs. They have their puppet to use as they wish.

Trump just hired a Gerald Ford/Bob Dole operative and will assuredly be hiring more of the same. Is he GOPe now?

I think it is kind of ironic that Ted Cruz has gotten the GOPe to back him...brilliant if you ask me. Trump has more in common with the GOPe than Ted Cruz will ever have. Give it a rest Trumpbot.

Nope.

Trump is supported by AMERICANS.

He has won virtually every primary where everyone actually voted.

Cruz has won the ones, where a bunch of GOP insiders select who will represent them. Cruz is establishment, all the way.

The GOP has been selling out America now for over one entire generation.

Cruz is just more of the same old ... stuff.

Trump is strongly saying, it is time to be for America once again. For Americans, for US jobs, and for building a border fence.

Nobody else has said those things. For more than one entire generation, our “party” has been selling out America to CHINA.

Trump is saying, it is time for America once again.

Trump is completely right.

Why is it everything critical of Trump is part of a grand conspiracy by the GOPe? Did you read the article? Granted its the Washington Post but it chides the Trump Campaign for not understanding the Primary process in that the “ground game” is real and failing to play it has negative consequences.

It didn’t call him names, make unfounded accusations, or anything else, it just pointed out the reality of the situation.

Are you telling me the Washington Post hires almost exclusively from the Left? Next you’ll tell me that eggs come from chickens or Alaska is cold.

I was just pointing out that the (very) partisan poster 2ndDivisionVet posted an anti-Trump screed.

He is getting very monotonous, in his constant trolling of this website for Cruz.

Constant. Cruz is not a good candidate. He will be creamed by the Democrats, yet the Cruz people here on this website are going about destroying the election. They will throw the election to the democrats, just to beat Trump.

Who is completely right, by the way.

No it’s not.

Every member of the GOPe has endorsed Cruz.

All of them.

Yea, I like some of what Trump says too but I don’t trust him because of his recent liberal past and monetary support of liberals. Spare me the “it was business” BS. He has no principles. Cruz on the other hand I trust based on his commitment to the Constitution and his past actions and his principles. Ted never gave money to liberals just like I haven’t. It is an easy choice for me.
