EAL failed in 1991 due to idiotic management (among other things)...And the Machinist Union that decided to watch the company go under rather than compromise on a contract.

It was in fact a perfect storm of stupidity all the way around, but the unions would not have been that antagonistic if Lorenzo hadn’t been busy being Lorenzo and pissing quite literally everyone off just to be doing it. Apparently his later MO was “piss everyone off until they pay me to go away.”

As others have noted, EAL is alive and (so far) well again - someone pulled the remains of the company out of the trash heap, dusted it off and got it running again. No, it's a whole different company. The owners just bought the intellectual property including trademarks of the original Eastern Airlines from whatever company ended up with it after the bankruptcy. The planes are just painted to look like the original Eastern Airlines.
