Migrants Poured into Britain after Ice Age

By John von Radowitz, Science Correspondent, PA News

Britain experienced a tidal wave of immigration as soon as the last Ice Age ended, new data has shown.

Previously it was thought that Britain’s repopulation was a slow process led by a few pioneering explorers.

Researchers now know that humans responded rapidly to climate change and moved into Britain en masse as soon as the ice receded.

Up to 20,000 years ago a huge ice sheet extended as far south as Norfolk. Then temperatures rose rapidly, producing warming weather than we have now.

Once the glaciers had retreated, people returned to what was then the British peninsular. Only later did Britain become separated from Europe by the English Channel.

Experts had assumed that for several centuries pioneering settlers filtered into Britain before the main reoccupation.

But combining the dating of artefacts with ice core climate information has produced a new version of events.

Archaeologist Nick Barton, from Oxford Brookes University, who led the study, said: “The big question has always been how quickly, and in what number, did people return once the glaciers had retreated?

“Now, with the benefit of large numbers of radiocarbon dates corrected against a highly accurate record of global climatic change of the Greenland ice record, it seems that reoccupation was almost an instantaneous event across northern and central Europe.”

The findings are published in the latest edition of the Journal of Quaternary Science.

Researchers now want to know why people moved so quickly. They may have been drawn by new possibilities offered in the north, or something may have driven them.

Co-author Martin Street, from the Romisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum in Neuwied, Germany, said: “It seems clear that people were following the herds of large animals, like horse, which expanded to occupy the continent during this period. Humans can be seen as part of that pulse.”

By writing "almost an instananeous event", it sounds like D-Day in reverse, or a pre-historic version of the California Gold Rush. :)

"In an astonishing piece of detective work, they matched mitochondrial DNA material extracted from the tooth cavity of Britain's oldest complete skeleton with that of a 42-year-old history teacher. . ."

Amazing. DNA from a 9,000 year old skeleton; and the hair (Laci's)found on the plyers in Scott Peterson's boat has been compromised by 'handling'. . .

Would say, 'go figure'; but we do not have to.

As for Cheddar man and the more recent determinations of our history; find it all fascinating. The further back we go; it seems the more forward 'we' become.

They could have moved quickly into Europe because of other climate changes occurring around the same time...the desertification of North Africa. During the ice age much of Northern Africa is thought to have been habitable...very. So, when North Africa became desert, there was a massive outpouring of people -- perhaps the true and original diaspora. Google "archaeological linquistics" for some reading on the subject.

Simple. Even then the Brits were smart enough to want to get out of France.

There is also La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club Man -- a skeleton found in San Diego County, CA a few years back. The catgut on a fossilized racquet was used to find his age...sabertooth catcut, by the way.

Questions abound:

Did they arrive behind the shrinking glaciers in SUVs?
Was Pat Buchannan there first, holding up his hand saying: "Stop!"?
Were the schools bilingual in Anglo, Saxon and Welsh?
Did PETA excoriate them for following behind the herds in an effort to obtain meat?
As the glaciers receded, did they preserve the wetlands?
Was "Dick" Gephardt's hair just as good as it is today?

Inquiring minds...

I just read last night that 80% of Europeans have DNA that was already in Europe before the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), 23,000-18,000 years ago. Very little was contributed by the migrant agriculturalist. The LGM was the coldest period during the Ice Age.

"British Have Changed Little Since Ice Age, Gene Study Says"

From a little study of such topics, I recall the Picts predate the Celts, who predate the Romans, who predate the various Germanic folks.

Was there a group before Picts?

Coming up to the present: Folks are now quite worried about recent immigrants, who seem to not be able to get along with others.

Why wasn't this stated properly?

Britain experienced a tidal wave of immigration as soon as GLOBAL WARMING BEGAN.
