December 29, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - Startling new Army statistics show that strife-torn Baghdad - considered the most dangerous city in the world - now has a lower murder rate than New York.

The newest numbers, released by the Army's 1st Infantry Division, reveal that over the past three months, murders and other crimes in Baghdad are decreasing dramatically and that in the month of October, there were fewer murders per capita there than the Big Apple, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

B-b-b-b-but this just can't be. NYC and Washington D.C. have strict gun control whereas every Iraqi male is allowed to own an assault rifle!

A considerable achievement indeed, given that Iraq had to endure a ferocious dictatorship until 2003, which generally leads to looting sprees, murders and all kinds of vendettas...

All in all, a great success for US, coalition and Iraqi forces. Soon the insurgents will feel the winds of change, too, as more and more people will no longer be afraid of them.

Seriously? They have gun rights? I remember the Brits were trying to gobble up guns in the city they controlled. I hope you are right. Gun rights are best for the long term. FReegards....

Well, I should say last I knew, from a few months ago, this was a Coalition Provisional Authority ruling. I forget if it was one AK-47 per adult or one per family, but the idea was that they were necessary for people to protect themselves. You'll remember that AKs were being fired in the streets of Baghdad to celebrate the capture of Saddam. So far I haven't heard of any attempts to seize them. Of course explosives and RPGs are forbidden.

This article confirms what I have said a few times on FR. There are more terrorists on the streets of our cities than in Iraq. It is not confined to the cities either, as it is becoming common in some of the rural areas. A rapist or child molester is as evil as a Sadaam or Osama. Yet, we turn them out on the streets with a slap on the wrist. Through most of our history, rape was considered a capital crime, the same as murder. Now it is considered a minor felony or in some cases a misdemeanor. It is no mystery why we have so many child molestations and rapes.

By contrast, New York's murder rate is seven murders per 100,000 people, Los Angeles' murder rate is 17 per 100,000, and Chicago's is 22, Lott said, citing FBI crime statistics.

Chicago worse than LA? I never would've thunk it. The spirit of the midwestern gangsters lives on I guess.

One 7.62mm (or lesser calibre) rifle per household. (AK-47s, fully automatic, are OK) 12.7/14.5 mm machine guns are a no-no.

It might be because the biggest murderer has been caught in a spider hole, and the other two are already dead.

Guess the Bush administration had a postwar plan after all. Dean, Kerry, Gephardt et al. simply weren't bright enough or too self-interested to figure it out. One thing is certain: If Gore or any of them had been president, there would indeed have been a quagmire. That experience they have.

It will be interesting to see if this is reported by ABCNBCCBSWashingtonPostNewYorkTimes.

If so, they’ll spin this that MORE restrictive gun laws are needed in the US.

Funny. The only thing I heard on the networks yesterday was that we lost more troops in Iraq recently than we did during the spring. Gotta love our objective media!

Our ally (and pain in the side of the left) John Lott, and the 1st Armored Division in Bagdhad agree ~ crime is down in Baghdad.

Good ammo for responding to those who have used numbers to undermine our efforts.

Then, please pray for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan who are in harm's way. They know our enemies.

I don't know what all the rules are, but I've seen groups of armed men in civilian attire making what looks like impromptu check points on the highway (Tribute Money?). AK's and machine guns. In the open.

Yes the Americans allowed people to retain their small arms. The Brits were trying to take them away, which figures, given their track record on guns.

The point though is that allowing people to retain personal firearms for 'their protection' is a lot better than what the anti-gun nuts would like to do in this country.
