ORLANDO, Fla. - The record industry's legal battles against music pirates couldn't be more effective if the swashbuckling ship's captain portrayed by Russell Crowe were at the helm, a study shows.

Since the fall, the number of Americans engaged in swapping digital music files online has fallen 50 percent, a study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project says.

"The plunge in swapping and sharing songs was prompted by a spate of lawsuits as well as the growth of legal online music stores, said Mary Madden, co-author of the Pew report. "

Or, maybe all the serious music buffs have already downloaded all the stuff they needed to complete their collections.....

I got a large number as well, but most of them came from CD's my daughter has. The only ones I downloaded were christian music artists.

I was about to say: "Heck, they downloaded all of it already and that's why it "dropped".

A nationwide telephone survey of 1,358 online users suggests that the number of music downloaders plummeted to 18 million from 35 million from late May to mid-December

How many active downloaders would tell the truth to a telephone interviewer?

When I first got cable internet I was so happy with the speed that I down loaded many things that I have no interest in really and now I am in the process of deleting a bunch of junk that I didn't really want to begin with.

I'm partial to blue grass music.

I downloaded the tracks I wanted to CD from the 550 or so I obtained in file sharing on Kazaa. I then dumped Kazaa (the audio files go with it) because of the spyware that had come with the downloads.

Uh, glad they didn't ask me. Kazaa Lite is rolling as we speak. I am checking out a group I was told about on here! lol
And, yes, I do buy CD's.Not often, but I do!
I thought Lite didn't have the spyware. Or, maybe we just got rid of it. Mmmm, better check that out.

From my recollection, Kazaa tried to support itself partially from the proceeds of the spyware operation. Kazaa Lite is a pirated version of Kazaa that strips the spyware. There's a moral in there somewhere...

In any event, as mp3 players become more popular, it will become easier and safer to swap mp3's. Friends will just swap music among each other as email attachments, or by uploading/downloading mp3's from their mp3-players to friends computer/players as they visit each other in person. And it will be completely invisible to, and untrackable by, RIAA.

You nailed it, Chretien. I've already gotten the bulk of what I wanted. There are about 20-25 more that I want, but I don't want to be sued, and I'm tired of all the extra software you get when you download Bearshare's free version, which is the only one I like.

But the thing the RIAA and it's record company partners do not see, is the lasting negative effect these lawsuits will have on future business. Plus, on top of that, the internet has made the record companies obsolete overnight. A new way to distribute your music has come about, and the minute the first person who figures out the business model to make it work, the record companies will go the way of the buggy whip. Good ridance to bad rubbish!!!

If you like live music and have a fast connection, find out about "Bit Torrent." It's great for getting music that you could never buy. maybe www.sharingthegroove.com is one place...

That's why i don't use Kazaa, too much of a risk for my taste. I use Winmx and nothing else to download music.

I'm very aware of sharingthegroove....it seems like I almost never have any free hard drive space, because once I burn a few shows, I find a few more!
I've been particularly psyched about all the Rat Pack shows that have been showing up there...Nothing like alternating between some Morbid Angel and Sammy Davis Jr.!
