[history]
Among those who apparently didn't listen to the 43-year-old unemployed woman whose recorded message was posted online last week by The Republic were Arizona's Jon Kyl and John McCain, along with 24 of their Senate colleagues, all of them collecting fat government paychecks.

You try going broke and bankrupt and having people tell you companies don't mind if you're in a homeless shelter No comment.

Let me see if I've got this straight;
According to you, if we subtract Govt workers and those groups of workers you think get paid too much from the equation, we can alter the stats that show wages are steadily increasing for American workers and support your claim that everybody is really suffering.
The contortions in logic some people are willing to go through to maintain their depressed outlook.....

I simply think Bush and his economic team really don't know what is going on. I don't impart any malicious intent to them on this issue.

"For the 12 months ending in December, workers' wages and benefits grew by 3.8 percent, compared with a 3.4 percent increase in 2002. Factor in inflation and that is a loss of real wages. I don't know what the government is claiming inflation is now days (I consider their figures phony and pay little attention to them), but I keep very accurate records (for tax purposes, I'm self employed) and my base costs for living in Feb 2004 were slightly above 10 percent higher than Feb 2003. By basic costs, I mean the ones that are absolutely essential for my life as an American, i.e. Heat, Vehicle fuel, food, housing, clothing, vehicle repairs (I schedule the same basic maintenance every February, tune up, alignment, etc.), electricity, water, phone, etc.

Look, all of us have problems. Most of us don't whine about them.

no, we are not "altering" the stats. we are simply selecting a different sample space from them.
if I'm trying to gauge the wage effects on private sector middle class workers, why do I want public school teachers in the dataset, or postal workers? or corporate executives?

I honestly agree with you. I think that this problem was started with Klintoon and his brilliant Import-Export Bank act and the absolute blind ignorance or tin ear that the handlers in Washington that surround W. He's just not in tune with middle America and it will cost him the election.

Really? So where are these 8.2 million? Living on the streets in cardboard boxes and eating at the Salvation Army? These claims aren't very believable. The country would look like the great depression with millions in soup lines. They're entirely believable. Read the Wall Street Journal, for instance - middle-aged women are being laid off right and left; many of them go to live with their aging parents & end up taking care of them. A lot of husbands are staying home while their wives work. As was previously mentioned, many college grads or even young people in their late 20s are moving back in with their parents.
In short, I'd say the #1 reason you *don't* see Depression-style "hoovervilles" is because the Federal Reserve is doing all it can to keep credit rates incredibly low. Recently I read of the Fed proposing a *0-percent* overnight loan rate to banks. Right now people are racking up credit card and home equity debt like crazy, because they're banking on future inflation to wipe that debt down. But sooner or later the cheap credit / 0-cost credit pyramid is going to fall over.

Living on the streets in cardboard boxes and eating at the Salvation Army?I have a close family friend who is with the Salvaton Army in Colorado. She tells me they are almost overwhelmed with requests for help. Colorado economy is substantially stronger than most of the nation.

I'm not hearing that. I'm hearing more of the quitting of the political system, a total loss of faith in both parties. bump. my feelings exactly.
