SAN FRANCISCO, March 19 (Reuters) - Police arrested 18 protesters in San Francisco marking the first anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq on Friday, a spokeswoman said.
Several hundred demonstrators marched down San Francisco's main Market Street and others gathered in front of the worldwide headquarters of Bechtel, the privately held engineering firm involved in Iraq reconstruction projects.
A few people chained themselves together with plastic piping. Others played drums and sang.
"Bechtel out of Iraq," read one sign.
"Shut down the war profiteers," another sign declared.
A police spokeswoman said those arrested were charged with blocking the street and refusing to move when requested.
Liberal San Francisco has been a leading U.S. center of opposition to U.S. President George W. Bush's decision to wage war against Iraq, and thousands were arrested a year ago in large demonstrations after the start of the conflict.

The Koran-icle must be so disappointed in the turnout, considering all the free publicity they gave it.

You know, sometimes I wonder if we don't need to give these people what they want. Go get Hussein, go get Aristede, call off the dogs from hunting Al-Qaeda, let 'em all go back "home", seal off our borders, cut off all our overseas funding (except maybe Isreal, they'll be stuck out there) and let 'em have at it.
Grrrrrr!!
I know that's not feasible, plausible or possible. Besides, it'd be these freaks I'd want in those countries, not the millions of innocents who are trying to develop a normal life.
Barbarians at the gates, and we have to worry about treason from within.

I have to laugh, in the mid 80's, I frequently traveled to San Francisco from Nevada for meetings with Bechtel. On one trip a group of anti-nuke protesters was in the same general area and one was my second cousin from Oregon (where I now live). I haven't seen him since, lucky me.

Kerry must be proud of his supports.

Yeah, I gotta a few of 'em in the Berkeley/SF area - all nutbag leftists who embrace moveon.org and every other socialist/commie group you can think of. Must be in the water in that area.
To: JohnHuang2
Yep, I just heard them marching down the street a few minutes ago.
I work in SF, unfortunately--but fortunately just 2 days a week!
SF is a real armpit.

Thanks for the pointed correction. Obviously I meant present.

Does anyone in California ever protest Diane Fineswine for being married to a man with a substantial contract for work in Iraq?

Not being critical--done it a 100 times myself and it's good to laugh at ourselves--please, nothing critical--it was a fine post....I just took advantage of it--it kind of was an editorial statement of the aforementioned culprits!

Apparently, the way to rebuild Iraq is some good old hippie capitalism. We need to get the hashpipe manufacturers and tie dye guys involved instead of some evil multinational engineering concern. "Yeah, that's the ticket."
