Happy Easter to all! - And another Anna Update(4/11/2004)

Today's news is just a continuation of the most recent:

Anna gained one ounce since yesterday. (Current weight: 3 lbs, 10.6 oz - almost back to her birth weight!).

She is now eating 27cc of breast milk (90% strength) every 3 hours. They are rotating feedings with bottle, then tube, bottle, then tube, etc. She gets better at it with each bottle feeding.

Diana got to do the 3:00PM bottle feeding today. I'm not sure it helped Diana's depression when we left, though.

And even Diana's Mom got to hold her for the first time:

No, we don't yet have an ETA on Anna's coming home. We just know the landmarks she has to achieve - weight (4.5 oz), eating from bottle/breast with no trouble, improved ability to maintain body heat.

She is marching towards all 3!

Update 4/14/2004

She is up to 3 lbs 11.6 oz – surpassing her birth weight.

Still eating well – 33 cc every 3 hours

We actually caught the Dr. while at the hospital this morning. He is impressed with her progress. He said that really, all we are waiting for is for her to put on the weight.

She is even improving at being able to keep body heat.

Dr. did give us an interesting fact – The majority of full-term babies do best on breast milk, while (contrary to logic) premies have a tendency to not tolerate breast milk well. In fact, he stated that only about 25% of premies do well on breast milk.

He said that in the cases where there is some problem with tolerance, they will mix 50% breast milk with another product (made from partially broken down milk product?) to ease digestion and provide additional nutrition. Fortunately, he indicated that this was not indicated here, as she is doing a reasonable job of tolerating the breast milk, and is gaining weight.

I notice that you have mentioned Diana's depression a few times on this thread. Perhaps it is because Diana must leave Anna behind at the hospital for the time being. But in case it isn't, Have you and Diana been keeping the doctor updated? Is there anyone here on this board who can advise the Battmans?
