Statue of the American Soldier in Iraq
www.usstopekaclg8.org ^ | 4/1/04 | Bob Ohm

This picture of the statue was made by an Iraqi artist named Kalat, who for years was forced by Saddam Hussein to make the many hundreds of bronze busts of Saddam that dotted Baghdad. This artist was so grateful that the Americans liberated his country, he melted 3 of the fallen Saddam heads and made a memorial statue dedicated to the American soldiers and their fallen comrades. Kalat worked on this night and day for several months. To the left of the kneeling soldier is a small Iraqi girl giving the soldier comfort as he mourns the loss of his comrade in arms. It is currently on display outside the palace that is now home to the 4th Infantry division. It will eventually be shipped and shown at the memorial museum in Fort Hood, Texas.

Origins:   According to the Army News Service (ARNEWS), the text reproduced above is a relatively accurate description of the statue shown in the photograph accompanying it.

In July 2003, two statues of Saddam Hussein, which an Iraqi sculptor named Kalat had a hand in creating, were removed with explosives from outside a palace complex in Saddam's hometown of Tikrit, Iraq, where the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division headquarters group is located. The 555th Engineer Group cut up the bronze statues and shipped the pieces to Kalat, who using a photograph of 1st Sgt. Glen Simpson as a model spent several months fashioning them into a likeness of an American soldier kneeling to mourn a fallen comrade, while a young girl reaches out to comfort him in his time of grief.

According to ARNEWS:

The sculpture is based on a scene many in Iraq have witnessed in one form or another.

A Soldier kneels before a memorial of boots, rifle and helmet ? his forehead resting in the hollow of hiss hand. Behind and to his right stands a small Iraqi girl with her hand reaching out to touch his shoulder.

The statue evokes emotion. The girl was added to the statue to remind people of why the sacrifice was made, [Command Sgt. Maj. Chuck] Fuss said.

"It's about freedom for this country, but it's also about the children who will grow up in a free society," he said.

The statue will eventually be flown to the 4th Infantry Division museum at Fort Hood, Texas.

Actually, If I remember correctly, in the Wall Street Journal a month or so ago they had an article where they said the artist hired only did it for the money and wasn't really in support of the US troops. Sorry, I don't have access to WSJ archives to quote.

Its obvious that you haven't a clue as to what's funny and what isn't. That website is by far, more original and more enticing than that bagdurt 'art' as you so call it. Personally I call that claymation garbage - I'd smelt it down into ordnance to use in attacks against the residents of Fallujah.

Iraqi sculptor Kalat examines the statue of an American Soldier made from melting down bronze statues of Saddam Hussein.

Changing faces: statue honors fallen heroes

No, I would not. I repeat, this is insipid, amaturish work expressing cheap hallmark card sentimentality. Its the sort of thing that appeals to the same dimwits who buy oil paintings of crying clowns and crystal unicorns.

This crummy sculpture should be booby trapped and left in Falluja for the vandals.

I can't be a Wally George wanna be, because I do not know who Wally George is, nor do I care.

Apparently you are insecure and feel the need to level personal attacks at anybody who doesn't share your proletarian taste in tacky-ass Precious Moments type kitsch.

I see why you go by the disrespect-engendering kid's nickname Skip. As your name suggests, I'll disregard you. Goodbye Skip.

You don't have the maturity to talk to adults. I would love it if you would just leave me alone.

Yes, it truely boggles the mind the kind of primeval and rudimentary mentalities who believe claymation of this low-caste caliber has a value beyond its raw smelted scrap value. But then again, what else can you expect from opprobrious reprobates such as these? Nothing but continued offal, detritus and dross.

The first thing I noticed about this sculpture supposedly expressing Iraqi gratitude, is it was not made for a newly liberated Iraq. Rather, it was intended for export and consumption of emotional, taste-challenged Americans like you, who are easily satisfied with saccharine and rather obvious platitudes.

Why otherwise would the child in the sculpture be dressed as a stereotypical American a poster child from the 1950s, and not a stereotypical Iraqi child with head scarf and sandals? The crudely executed child throws the whole thing horribly off.

Sorry, there is NO statement of Iraq's gratitude, here, it was a cheap export item from the start, bland and poorly executed.

All this tearful hyperemotional praise towards this tribesman is totally out of place at a time when others of his tribe cheer as they drag the charred corpses of Americans through the streets. Iraqis won't police themselves, they won't cooperate in their own liberation, they seem rather pleased when Americans continue to die.

What use is this so called artist's crappy exported propaganda art now? Unless he starts producing some pro-American propaganda for domestic Iraqi production, screw him very much

Exactly John, some people are easily fooled by cheap imitations.

The "artist" knew that. He obviously made it for export to the USA. Unless he sticks his neck out and starts making pro USA art for Iraqi consumption, he's the same cowardly slave who made Saddam Hussein statues, just working for a different master.

Its as plain as plain can be that this detritus is a slice of propaganda, designed to incite sympathy (and pity) from the weak-minded masses.

Not only do I NOT have any sympathy for this tribesman or his supposed 'art', but as I mentioned before I'd liquify it down into scrap metal (suitable for munitions in the fight against tribe members like him, who attack Americans trying, in some measure, to help restore order and security to his land).

Misdirected empathy for these terrorists (those who dragged the burned bodies of Americans and tied them up on bridges) and their kin is not only uncalled for but also is totally unwarranted. And until they show some real support for our efforts to stabilize their dustbin of a country, I won't budge one IOTA as to my condemnation of their 'art' (NOTICE THE QUOTATION MARKS!)

I think the reason we are all parting ways is by the fact that you are assuming that all iraqi's are terrorists. As you well know, that's not true.

Just like the fact that not all americans were slave owners, not all germans were nazi's and not all cubans are castro lovers... There ARE IN FACT victims of saddam..in Iraq. Being brutalized, molested, raped and tortured..is being victimized..period.

I don't know this "artist's" background..sure, we can ask..did he volunteer his services to saddam, or was he forced to perform? Maybe he's just a chameleon....forming or blending in to the whoever is occupying or leading the country. Maybe he is a buttkisser, or a suck up.

Regardless....since we don't know..there's no point in drawing any conclusions as severe as yours.
