Very fat cat seized (40 pound German house cat! With picture)
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | April 7, 2004

Posted on 04/07/2004 8:27:25 AM PDT by dead

A German cat weighing six times the normal weight is so fat that it cannot take more than four steps without getting exhausted.

Now officials at a Berlin animal shelter are having trouble finding a new owner for six-year-old Mikesch, after it was taken away from his elderly owner.

The man, who was himself taken to a nursing home, had been feeding the 18.5 kilo cat two kilos of mince each day.

couple of kilos of mince a day. Photo: AFP

"You can call it cruelty to animals," said shelter veterinarian Karin Bartell, as the cat stared straight ahead with a bored look.

"It's a problem for joints and the heart. The cat can't clean itself because he is too fat. He walks three or four steps and is completely exhausted because the heart no longer works properly and the cat can't breathe normally anymore."

Mikesch has been put on a strict diet to reduce his size.

Cats usually weigh between 3-6kg and should eat no more than about 300 grams of food each day, vets say.

A spokesman for Guinness World Records said they did not keep track of fat cats any longer but said the existing record was 18.55kg - a cat from Minnesota named O.T.

Now that's a fat cat!

My feline friend "Fela" is 9 years old today and I thought she was fat. (14-15 lbs) No comparison.

Somebody put that feline on the treadmill now! The weird thing about stories like this is that every cat I've ever had, or seen for that matter, only ate what it wanted to, regardless of how much food was in the bowl. These portly housecats must just keep eating even if they're not hungry.

My dog, on the other had, always eats everything presented to her. I swear if she raided the storage can of dog food she would not stop until all fifty pounds were consumed.

I have inherited my daughter's two cats (her new husband is allergic). One cat is normal size...the other one weighs almost 18 pounds and looks like a raccoon.

Both are fed the same amount, both go up and down the stairs together, and in fact, the fat cat is very quick on her feet and is always running outside when I open the door.

I can't figure out why she is so much fatter. She is healthy and agile, but she is just plain FAT!

Well, I had a cat that weighed 16 pounds, though his weight fluctuated between 13 and 16. He was not a small cat, so was just big, not really fat. I'm sure like people there are animals that are very thin, and others that are much huskier. It still does not explain these 30- 40 pound tubbies, unless than have the same type of glandular problems that some very obese humans suffer with.

I know this is not the same story, but for what it's worth:

===================================

From Snopes.com:

Claim: Canadian man raises enormous 89 lb., 69-inch cat..

Status: False.

Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2001]

Rodger Degagne, a former employee with AECL in Chalk River, may be embarking on a new career as Feline Breeder. Relaxing in his spacious home on the shores of the Ottawa River, Mr. Degagne recalls how 15 years ago he befriended two stray young cats on the old AECL research facility at Chalk River. The kittens had appeared in late summer and apparently had gotten under a security fence around the old labs abandoned since the late 50's. With the help of his tuna sandwich, Mr. Degagne was able to coax the kitties close enough so that he could pick them up. A self-described animal lover, he did not want to place the kittens in the local Humane Society. In this largely rural area, cats of all stripes and ages largely go unwanted and are humanely disposed of after a few days.

Later that evening his wife Louise and their two children, Nicole and Kelly, came to a family decision to keep the kittens which they named Lost and Found. Lost turned out to be female and Found a male. When nature finally took it's course, a litter of kittens was born 6 years later. One of the litter was a big white female with a unique black markings on her side and tail. Something about the kitten captured the hearts of the family and while her siblings eventually found homes elsewhere, Snowball stayed with the Degagnes.

While Lost and Found are no longer with us, their progeny live on. In her 9 years Snowball's size has seemed to snowball. Put simply, Snowball is no ordinary cat, she measures 69 inches from nose to tail and weighs in at 87 Ibs.

"She started out a big kitty and she just seemed to keep growing. She always meowed for more food and would climb up on the counter to eat food which I forgot to cover. Chicken is her favorite. Once I left a cooked chicken on the table that I was going to use for a boat picnic, an hour later the chicken was gone", Louise said.

"We knew that Snowball wasn't your average cat when the neighbor's German Shepherd ran yelping away from his first encounter with her. She just isn't afraid of any animals. After we found a half eaten raccoon out by the garage, we decided that maybe Snowball should be kept fenced in. We soon discovered that while we can keep Snowball in the yard, we couldn't keep raccoons from Snowball. At least it kept the food bills down!" Rodger laughed. "Like all female cats she is very territorial, but with us she is just a big ole kitten" he said.

So what does a 87 pound cat eat? Snowball goes through a about 3 lbs. of cat food a day, along with cooked chicken, supplemented with deer and moose that Rodger hunts in the fall. "She likes pike a lot, so I don't throw them back any more." Snowball often accompanies Rodger fishing on the Ottawa, eagerly peering over the side of the boat as soon as his line goes tight.

So what do the Degagne's attribute Snowball's size to?

Rodger says "Well, the vet thinks it could be her thyroid, but she isn't fat, she's just a real big cat. I think maybe her parents got into something at Chalk River that they shouldn't have."

Origins: No, the photo isn't real, nor does it depict what the accompanying text claims. The explanation was somebody's attempt at a bit of creative writing, (added to the photo after the fact), about which the AECL said:

Mr. Robert DeGagne, the owner of this cat, is not a former employee of AECL and the AECL Chalk River facility has certainly not been abandoned for the past fifty years!

We do not know whether or not the size of the cat depicted in the attachment is accurate. If it is true, the size can likely be attributed to a thyroid condition, as described in the article, or cross-breeding.

(The gag here is that AECL, the organization for which Snowball's owner supposedly worked, is Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, and their facility at Chalk River in Ontario is home to a couple of research reactors. Hence, like a 1950s sci-fi movie, the explanation offered here for Snowball's tremendous size is that "maybe her parents got into something at Chalk River that they shouldn't have," a supposedly abandoned nuclear facility.)

Turning to our Guinness Book of World Records, we find that they list the world's largest domestic cat as a male Queensland, Australia, tabby named Himmy who tipped the scales at just under 47 lbs. and was 38 inches long. However, the on-line version of Guinness includes an article and a picture of a whopping big kitty, but it still measures only 41 inches from tip to tail, well short of the 69 inches claimed for the critter in the picture above.

According to the Ottawa Citizen, the picture actually shows an Edmonds, Washington, man named Cordell Hauglie and his cat Jumper, and the photo was manipulated with PhotoShop to create the effect of a feline of much larger-than-ordinary size. According to Mr. Hauglie:

"My daughter wanted to send an electronic photo of her cat to her friend. I got a little carried away. When we sent it to her friend, we never dreamed anyone would believe the photo was real."

He's had many chuckles over the analysis of the photo. Some viewers assert the cat appears stuffed, while others say it's standing, not being held. Still others suggest the man in the photo doesn't look as though he's holding a 40-kilogram object.

Truth is, he isn't. His son held up the cat for one photo, proving you can suspend a cat in that fashion, and Mr. Hauglie stood in the same light for the next shot. Last updated: 28 May 2001

I have a cat that can get very fat - I used to just keep the foodbowl full for her - but she'd just keep eating and eating - till she looked like a balloon that you could just poke and it would explode. She is a short haired cat with a small head - we used to call her "football kitty" cuz she looked like a football with legs and a tail sticking out. More recently though - I have cut way back on her food - and she is normal - with a LOT of loose belly skin that hangs down. It is hilarious to see her run across the yard - Her loose skin swings side to side as she runs.

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but I guess I am one--this thread makes me want to cry. If you're a cat lover, PLEASE READ BELOW: If you want your cat to live a long healthy life, DO NOT allow your cat to become overweight. Feed the cat less food, get it to exercise, feed it low-cal veterinary quality food--whatever! Just keep your cat slim--if you can't see a "waist" below the rib cage, your cat is too fat. Fat cats are prone to many, many diseases/conditions that cause great suffering and even death. IMPORTANT: IF YOU HAVE AN OVERWEIGHT CAT AND YOUR CAT SUDDENLY LOSES HER APPETITE FOR EVEN ONE (YES, ONE!) DAY, GET YOUR CAT TO THE VET ASAP!!!! An overweight cat who stops eating can deteriorate very quickly because of a secondary disease (caused by not eating) called feline hepatic lipidosis (FHL). FHL can be fatal if it's not treated immediately; only 40% of cats who get FHL recover.

Hubby and I spent FIVE THOUSAND dollars trying to treat our beloved Sadie's FHL. It started on a Friday when she stopped eating for the first time. By the time we got her to the vet the following Monday morning, she had gone into major liver failure. Ten weeks of round-the-clock care (IV fluids, stomach tube feeding every 4 hours, antibiotic injections, etc.) didn't save our Sadie. Five thousand dollars and buckets of tears later, we had to put our beloved kitty to sleep.

I'll never again look at a picture of an overweight cat without feeling sad and guilty about my beautiful Sadie's suffering.

Sorry about your cat. I hope you have another, or get one soon. There's nothing better to help get over the loss of a pet then another furry friend when the time is right.

I think ALL cat owners look at pictures such as the one of this obese feline and know the ramifications. I for one would do all I could to prevent any pet, dog or cat, from gaining so much weight.

I had never heard of FHL before (and I'm a fairly dedicated cat owner). I didn't know how overweight cats are more likely to get FHL, and how much suffering it causes. I pray every day that Sadie understood we loved her and were trying to help her, not hurt her.

Sorry--I just wish I had known then what I know now........
