Representatives of regional offices for the boycott of Israel opened a four-day meeting in Damascus Monday aimed at tightening a ban against companies that deal with the Jewish state.
Organizers had said a new item on this year's agenda would be how to stop Israeli companies from trying to penetrate the Iraqi market. But Sabah al-Imam, head of the Iraqi delegation, asked that the subject be removed, saying, "There is no Israeli activity in Iraq" approved by Iraqi authorities.
The meeting, which brings together representatives from 15 Arab countries, will discuss the Arab-Israeli conflict and consider blacklisting new companies that do business with Israel.
Mauritania, Egypt and Jordan, who have diplomatic ties with Israel, stayed away.
Ahmed Khazaa, commissioner general of the Damascus-based Central Boycott Office, said at the opening session that the meeting was being held this year under "very sensitive and delicate circumstances."
The importance of the boycott is that it can isolate Israel economically, Khazaa said, citing studies that estimate Israel loses US$3 billion annually due to the boycott.
Mohammed al-Ajami, who heads the Syrian regional office, said the meeting is "a direct and practical response to the policy of the criminal escalation adopted by Israel."
The boycott will remain active, he said, until Israel withdraws from occupied Arab lands.
The once-influential boycott office was set up in 1951 and initially funded by the Arab League to track down foreigners who do business with or support Israel and then ban them from operating in the Arab world.
The office once listed more than 8,500 companies and people, including Coca-Cola and Ford Motor Co. but the boycott's influence waned as Egypt and Jordan made peace with Israel, the Palestinians embarked on a now faltering peace process and several Gulf states started ignoring the blacklist.

Good old Abe is a complete jerk. Support for Israel IS support for the US. Our objectives are the same.
