I have a simple way to deal with religious proselytizers, whatever their faith. I simply say, "I do not discuss religion with strangers." If they persist, I ask them if they heard what I had said. If they continue to persist, I insist they leave me along.
Works every time.
I wasn't addressing the questions to you, but since you took the time to answer them anyway, I'll take the time to answer your questions.
"Why? Do I look like some kind of shrinking violet to you. Am I some shaking in my boots weenie? Can I not say 'thank you but no'?"
How the hell should I know? I don't even know you....but from what I have seen so far....I would go as so far to say that you are rude and obnoxious.
"I dearly wish people would grow a spine."
If growing a spine means being like you...no thanks. Let me just point out that no one and I mean NO ONE should have to put up with religious spammers. I've got a religion and I certainly don't like having someone else's religion shoved down my throat. If you want to put up with these spammers, go right ahead...it's a free country. But don't penalize the rest of us for not wanting to put up with religious spammers. ARE WE CLEAR NOW?
This is a public forum. If you want to have a private conversation then may I suggest freepmail?
I would go as so far to say that you are rude and obnoxious.
Saying no thank you is rude? How odd.
I always look at it this way, people are in a certain religion because they think it is the one true way. They want others to be as happy as they are in their one true way. So they spread the joy so to speak. Why should I dislike them for that?

They are not shoving anything down your throat. They are actually, in their minds, trying to help you. As misguided as it is it is actually a nice thing for them to do. So, I once again politely say no thank you and usually that ends it.
ARE WE CLEAR NOW?
Much clearer then I think you know.
"This is a public forum."
Now that's about the smartest thing you have said so far.
"If you want to have a private conversation then may I suggest freepmail?"
Why? Can't you control yourself from butting in on other people's conversation?
"Saying no thank you is rude? How odd."
Of course not.
"I always look at it this way, people are in a certain religion because they think it is the one true way."
Yea
"They want others to be as happy as they are in their one true way."
ok
"So they spread the joy so to speak."
The same type of joy the Muslims seem to be spreading around the entire world?
"Why should I dislike them for that?"
Did I say you should dislike them? No, I didn't. I dislike people who want to spread their joy where it is not welcomed. I'm a Catholic....always been a Catholic....always will be a Catholic. I don't mind folks who are proud of their religion...I welcom that....I just don't welcome those who try to convert me.
He says he's not ignorant or a naif. About what.?. An unproven allegation. Puffing up like a cat and hissing don't make you smart or worldly.
Next time may I suggest that you add to your post that you want only the person you posted to replying to you? When you post in a public forum you can expect other members to chime in with their $0.02.

If they confined their joy spreading to talking I would have no problem with it. It is the killing and the terrorizing that I have a problem with.
I dislike people who want to spread their joy where it is not welcomed.
Unless you have a sign how do you expect them to know that you do not welcome them? Mind readers they are not.
If you do have a sign then it is quite rude of them to ignore it and they deserve to be put in their place.
I just don't welcome those who try to convert me.
Your privilege. But in the public square you have no right to try to shut them up. Which seems to be what the author of this article is advocating.
LOL Actually I am just a good ole' Catholic girl from New York who has to hide in her house when a pack of religious nut jobs comb the neighborhood looking to inflict their religion onto people who are not interested. Being nice to these people in the past never worked...still doesn't work by the way.
I don't have to explain myself to you or any other spineless weenie patrol....which by the way you are!
Your reply to my questions was RUDE. You implied that those who don't appreciate folks pushing their religion onto other people are spineless. How many times do I have to reply nicely to the same bunch of religious nut jobs who travel into my neighborhood trying to convert everyone they come into contact with? I've tried being rude....doesn't work either. No, I have to hide in my own house and refuse to open up the door while they continuously ring my door bell.

I just point at the "No Soliciting" sign", smile and close the door without speaking.
Do you like dogs?
I was telling mollynme about how good our puppy was at discourageing this sort of thing.
;-)
My in-laws live right down the road from a Jehova Witness Hall. These folks just don't take no or no thank you for an answer.
I like your approach!
What really bugs me is if my daughter answers the door. She's a polite kid and friendly.
I love dogs...I have one and he is too sweet to everyone.

One day I answered thr door wearing a witch's pendant and holding incense saying I'm a witch and would they like to join me in a ritual. End of solicitations :D
I had that happen once, too! I told the guy that if he didn't get gone, NOW, I'd assume a home invasion was in progress, and turn the matter over to Mr. Springfield.
They never came back again.
