Military Short Speak

The military seems to have a language of its own, with many terms, acronyms, initialisms and abbreviations that aren't generally used in the "civilian world."

What is an acronym? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words. It is spoken as one word.

What is an initialism? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words, but each letter is spoken separately.

What is an abbreviation? It is a shortened version of a word.

What is Short Speak? It is any and all of the above.

Want to what are they talking about?  Read on...

J

JAAD  - justification, approval, and acquisition documentation

JAAR  - [CJCSI 3500.02A] joint after-action report

JAB  - joint advisory board

JABO -  German - Allied fighter-bomber aircraft

P-47M Thunderbolt  (P-47 converted from a fighter to a fighter-bomber)

Jack

A flag flown at the bow of a ship or sometimes a sailor, from the Royal Navy term for sailor -- Jack Tar.  The Jack of a United States ship has a blue field and 50 white stars and is flown from the bow while in port.  During courts martial of courts of inquiry on board the Jack is flown from the yardarm.

JACKPOT  - nickname for joint airborne command center/command post

JAE - jump if above or equal

jaff  - electronic and chaff jamming

JAG - Judge Advocate General

Jagdpanzer - German - Hunting tank, an armored vehicle designed specifically to destroy tanks.

Lots more about Jagdpanzers here!

JAMCAT  - jammer communications attachment

JAMPACK - jamming package

JAO - joint area of operations

Jarhead  -  A perjorative term for a Marine.

One account suggests that it refers to the Marine high and tight haircut which is cut almost to the skin at the ears with a bit more as it goes up the head giving the appearance of a jar. Another legend says that during World War II the Mason Jar Company stopped making jars and made the helmets for Marines.

JATO  - [AR 310-50] jet assisted takeoff

JATS - jamming analysis and transmission selection

JAWS - Joint Air Force Systems Command War Game System

JB - Jet powered bomb

As a direct result of Great Britain's experiences with the German V-1 "buzz bombs," the USAAF considered the development of similar weapons. In late 1943, Northrop was awarded an USAAF contract to design and develop a Flying Wing "Power Bomb." Under secret Project MX-543, two Northrop Model JB-1 air vehicles were built.

The first airframe built was the Western Museum of Flight’s JB-1 man-carrying glider. Its unusual shape earned it the name "Bat." Except for the pilot's cockpit and canopy, the JB-1 glider was the unpowered aerodynamic equivalent of the second version, the jet powered JB-1A (Note: all of the 3-view drawings are of the JB-1A.) The JB-1 was used to explore the design's flight characteristics.

The JB-1 piloted version was lifted aloft as a glider by means of a tow aircraft. Tow hitches are visible at the tips of the two bomb containers. Only one man-carrying JB-1 was built to test the flying qualities of this flying-wing design. The center section of the JB-1 glider version included two stream-lined "torpedo-shaped" bomb containers. The center section was fabricated of formed and welded magnesium alloy plate. The wing panels were made of riveted and spot-welded aluminum alloy sheet with magnesium wingtips. The pilot's cockpit was located in the space that would be used for the jet engine installations in the unmanned JB-1A powered model.

Read more about the JB-1 here!

JC - jump if carry set

JC2WC  - [JP 3-13.1] Joint Command and Control Warfare Center

JCS  - Joint Chiefs of Staff

Gen. Richard Myers, Chairman JCS

The Joint Chiefs of Staff consist of the Chairman, the Vice Chairman, the Chief of Staff of the Army, the Chief of Naval Operations, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. The collective body of the JCS is headed by the Chairman (or the Vice Chairman in the Chairman's absence), who sets the agenda and presides over JCS meetings. Responsibilities as members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff take precedence over duties as the Chiefs of Military Services. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the principal military adviser to the President, Secretary of Defense, and the National Security Council (NSC), however, all JCS members are by law military advisers, and they may respond to a request or voluntarily submit, through the Chairman, advice or opinions to the President, the Secretary of Defense, or NSC. The executive authority of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has changed. In World War II, the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff acted as executive agents in dealing with theater and area commanders, but the original National Security Act of 1947 saw the Joint Chiefs of Staff as planners and advisers, not as commanders of combatant commands. In spite of this, the 1948 Key West Agreement allowed members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to serve as executive agents for unified commands, a responsibility that allowed the executive agent to originate direct communication with the combatant command. Congress abolished this authority in a 1953 amendment to the National Security Act. Today, the Joint Chiefs of Staff have no executive authority to command combatant forces. The issue of executive authority was clearly resolved by the Goldwater-Nichols DOD Reorganization Act of 1986: "The Secretaries of the Military Departments shall assign all forces under their jurisdiction to unified and specified combatant commands to perform missions assigned to those commands..."; the chain of command "runs from the President to the Secretary of Defense; and from the Secretary of Defense to the commander of the combatant command."

JD - Justice Department

JDAM - joint direct attack munitions

Jeep

The famous 1/4 ton, 4 wheel drive vehicle used be the Allies all over the world.  Probably from GP for General Purpose.

Jerry - British - A German

Jerry Can

A five gallon metal can designed for transporting gasoline and other volatile liquids,  named for German (Jerry) originators.  The early British copies tended to leak badly and legend has it that more fuel was lost to leaking jerricans in North Africa than was used by vehicles.

In the early 70's we had Falcon Codes that we used when communicating with Spotters on the Beach and with each other at sea, basically you just added it in at the end of an official transmission, usually at the completion of an evolution, Falcon code (a number), Out.

My favorite was Falcon Code 189 (guessing at the actual number) which basically said "You smell like you want to be alone"

We would trade the lists with each other when in Hong Kong or Subic and everybody seemed to have the list.

We won't know till tomorrow, when they run all the tests on her, what type of treatment will be administered. (if any)

Just PLEASE everyone, pray for her...she's a special friend.

Hugs back atcha!
Poppa B is as well as can be expected...
He has Dementia, and is going downhill rapidly...
That aside, he was happy to see me...
and we played some fun (but very strange) pool
at his assisted living facility...
I can't believe how well he can still shoot pool!
