and that there is no longer a military draft. This is the main reason, and is so important it eclipses every other. When Nixon eliminated the draft, it gutted the anti-war movement. Many of the males had been protesting out of worry over getting drafted, and some others were motivated by horror over draftees dying in a war they didn't agree with. When Viet Nam became a mostly volunteer effort, they no longer had anything to worry about, and the protests virtually disappeared.

And don't forget our own merry band of FR anti-war protesters...they're very noisy these days. Was that sarcasm? I haven't run across any of them lately, but then perhaps they're avoiding me because I tend to ask such uncomfortable questions.

The French liked him because they had lucrative business dealings with him. You know, all that rage the Arabs have against "neo-colonialism" that everybody said would bite us in the butt? Wait until the full details of the Oil for Food program hit the street. Oh, most of the Arab street will get a filtered version that blames Da Joooz or us, but in Iraq, France is going to have not a single friend.

One additional factor in my opinion was the backlash that took place in the 80's and beyond toward the unbelievably unjust treatment accorded returning Vietnam veterans by a "victorious" left. We won't be making that mistake again for at least a generation, although Lord knows they're trying. That's one of the reasons I'm out there. My generation isn't going to pull that crap if i have anything to say about it.

Great links. I picked up a great alternate tagline:
"Blind tolerance is as socially detrimental as blind intolerance."
