Man faces prison for biting off nose Man faces prison for biting off nose

A man has been found guilty of biting off his girlfriend's nose in a jealous rage, then virtually torturing her for hours.

A Superior Court of Ontario jury yesterday found Angel Jones, 27, guilty of aggravated assault, sex assault and uttering death threats in the Feb. 17, 2002 attack in the 26-year-old woman's Birchmount Rd. apartment.

The long-lasting assault was "tantamount to torture," prosecutor Paul Amenta had told the jury in his closing arguments.

On the night of the crime, the pair had had consensual sex in her home, but suddenly "a different person seemed to rear his head," Amenta said.

Jones accused the woman of infidelity, put her in a headlock, bit off her nose, spitting it on to the floor, according to evidence.

She was "disfigured horribly," Amenta said.

Police found her nose on the floor, but doctors were unable to reattach it. She has since had reconstructive surgery.

Dressed in a black jacket with dice on the back, Jones told Mr. Justice Norman Dyson yesterday he would be appealing the conviction and said he wanted transcripts of the trial.

The jury took less than 90 minutes to deliberate. It rejected Jones' arguments, which he made himself after firing his lawyer mid-trial, that biting off her nose was accidental.

He argued that her nose was in his mouth but only came off because the weight loss medicine she was using made her skin fragile, the judge said in summarizing Jones' position.

Nor did jurors buy his explanation that the victim had made up the story of the attack out of a desire for revenge.

They didn't hear that he had seven previous convictions for assault, including four while he was incarcerated awaiting this trial.

He also has had drug possession, trafficking and prohibited weapons convictions.

The day he attacked the victim, he had just been released from prison.

"It's the right result," said Amenta, who told reporters he would be seeking the maximum sentence, which for aggravated assault is 14 years.

Jones appears in court June 21 to begin the sentencing process.

A SCARBOROUGH woman fought back tears yesterday as she described the harrowing day that her lover bit off her nose, drank her blood and tortured her in an ordeal that lasted hours until heavily armed police broke into her apartment and rescued her. The accused assailant, Angel Jones, 27, fired his lawyer yesterday and then conducted cross-examination himself.

"You bit my nose off and you spit it out," the woman said to Jones.

"I thought I was going to die. Nobody was coming for me ... it felt like hours and hours and hours," the woman told Justice Norman Dyson.

She said Jones squatted upon her and forced her to perform sex acts while her nose bled.

"That excuse has to go in the all-time-best loosing legal defense category."

Reminds me of a story I heard once about a defense lawyer who couldn't keep his mouth shut.

At trial, the defendant was accused of biting off a man's ear in a bar-room brawl. During cross-examination of the only witness, the defendant's lawyer asked the witness if he had seen the defendant actually bite off the man's ear.

When the witness replied: "No, I didn't see that." the lawyers should have shut up and claimed the victory. But, he pressed on with: "Then what makes you think my client bit off this man's ear". The witness replied: "I didn't see him bite it off, but I did see him spit it out."
