PARIS - A man reportedly crying "God is great" stabbed a Jewish teenager in the thorax on Friday, seriously injuring the victim, officials said.
The young man, not identified by name, was attacked about 4 p.m. as he left a Jewish school in Epinay-sur-Seine, north of Paris in the rough Seine-Saint-Denis district, officials of the local prefecture said.
The victim was transferred to a hospital and the attacker fled the scene. Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin visited the site where the attack occurred.
Witnesses said a man shouted "God is great" then plunged a knife into him before fleeing.
Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin denounced the attack, saying he shares "the legitimate indignation of the Jews of France against this barbarous act which touches our entire national community."
Anti-Semitic attacks have been on the rise in France despite a series of measures put in place to counter them. However, physical assaults are less common than attacks on Jewish sites, from synagogues to schools, and desecration of Jewish cemeteries.
The Interior Ministry has reported 67 anti-Semitic acts in the first quarter of 2004, a 60-percent increase from the same period a year earlier.
Young Muslims have been blamed for many of the attacks which, over the past few years, have coincided with rising tension in the Middle East.
However, Muslims have also been victims of racist attacks. In March, an arson fire damaged a mosque and destroyed a Muslim prayer hall in Annecy, in southeast France.

When will the French ever get it. What the Nazis wanted to do to the Jews was terrible but they also wanted to do pretty much the same thing to everyone else too.
Similarly with their Islamo offspring, what they want to do to Jews soon becomes what they want to do to Frenchmen or as we have seen Americans and Spaniards. You ignor them at your own risk. Adopting a low profile is taken as a sign of weakness and does not get you a pass on attacks.
You know, the muslims get indignant when we identify the religion of a savage like this, but omit the religion of most other criminals.
What they overlook, however, is that none of those other criminals screech out religious propaganda in the midst of their crimes.
What they do, they do in the name of allah - which explains why I think allah is a jerk.

I guess the media is saving paper by omitting adjectives, like Muslim man or fanatic Muslim man. Afterall, (sarcasm) wouldn't want to violate the pc code and profile a man 'allegedly' committing a crime. I'm surprised they called them anti-Semitic attacks at all, because that just might 'unfairly' (more sarcasm) profile the many young, unemployed, unhappy Muslim youths in the Paris suburbs.
Oh yes, I've known all about the major media's dark underside ever since I spent the three days from Feb. 26-28, 1993, trying to tell all the networks, papers, and cable outlets that the WTC was bombed. They were busy telling the world how the whole thing was the result of a transformer fire, and it took them until the fourth day to admit the truth.
Those of us who were inside at the time knew the truth inside 10 minutes of it happening. WTC security, unlike the media, had no political interest to serve while getting the information to us.
The irony is that most people will not even notice the careful AP omission. The fact that this was a muslim nutcase attacking a Jew is so evident it doesn't even need to be said.
