Kerry to Reach Out to 'People on the Right'

ALBUQUERQUE — Counting on his liberal base to stick by him, Sen. John F. Kerry plans to aggressively court more conservative voters with a message that emphasizes traditional values of service, faith and family.

Following his pick last week of a running mate with potential appeal to rural communities, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee said he was not content to target the narrow band of swing voters that the two parties were expected to fight over in roughly 20 swing states.

"I'm going to talk to people on the right," Kerry told The Times on Friday during a joint interview with his vice presidential pick, Sen. John Edwards. "I want to talk to conservatives."

As for rank-and-file party members, Kerry said his record of strong support for environmental protection, gun control and abortion rights — all core Democratic issues — "speaks for itself about my priorities in policy terms."

Indeed, Kerry seemed unconcerned about antagonizing his liberal supporters.

"I'm a hunter. I'm a gun owner. A lot of people on the left don't like that, but that's who I am," he said.

The Massachusetts senator has already begun his effort to broaden his political reach. During a recent swing through the Midwest, where he tramped around farms and toted a shotgun on a trap-shooting range, Kerry said that he represented "conservative values," and emphasized his personal opposition to abortion.

"Kerry has been lurking on FR."

You mean he lurked before he denied lurking.

Yeah, this will work. Unfortunately for him, most of the folks on the right are there because they have half a brain. They don't vote on who has the best hair, looks the coolest, or can quip the best touchy feely lines. They won't fall for a stupid last minute pack of lies like this. Then again, let him waste his time.

That does it. I'm voting for him.

Kerry does not have a far enough reach for me. I would never accept him as an elected official in my Town. Not even for Dog Catcher.

"I'm a hunter. I'm a gun owner."

And once I've gotten power, I (and Dianne Feinstein) will decide what we hunters and gun owners need as legitimate weaponry. Your handguns... Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them in.

He's going to reach out to conservatives? With what? A scumbag-trial-lawyer-running mate? A totally business-hostile platform? Unlimited abortion? Kissing Frog butt?

Kerry's such a coward, who knows where he'll stand tomorrow.

"Los Angeles City Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa said he had heard no complaints from liberal constituency groups about the tenor of Kerry's campaign.

"I represent that wing," said Villaraigosa, a national co-chairman of Kerry's campaign. "People recognize that our success in November hinges on our ability to reach out to a broad cross-section of America."

Wolf in sheep's clothing. Kerry can pretend to embrace life begins at conception, but the record he brings speaks for itself. He can pretend to be conservative, but his record is ultraliberal.

Go court your base, Kerry. Clinton fooled the electorate once, no more...

You mean you aren't voting for Kerry/Edwards because they have "better hair"?

With one foot in Hell and the other teetering on the edge of the abyss, I think we do know where he'll stand tomorrow, his tomorrow. Trouble with cinos like ol' Feckless is, they want to take as many with them as they can, as if it would improve their destination.

"But he said he thought Edwards would be a particular asset in rural areas."

btw, as a Southerner who has Carolina and West Virginia relatives, where on earth did Edwards get the phoney/balony, William Faulkner, cracker accent from?

I'll bet he honed that piece of linguistic cornpone to appeal to juries.

None of us sound like that.

*Snort* Kerry needs to paint his face white, don a red bulbous nose and put on big shoes and a fire engine red wig. Then maybe he'll gain some credibility..

Release the fundraiser tape, you chicken ****, family values my rear end. Everyone I know sees right through your stupid election campaign. Be prepared for a blowout this November, kerry, you are a traitor, and the country knows it. You didn't fool anyone here in the Midwest with you hoaky farm stories and hunting tails. You are a CINO in a state where catholics actually go to Sunday church. You are as phoney as a $3 bill.

But Kerry's unflinching outreach to conservatives

Huh?

Pathetic. He's flinching, Slimes--he's flinching big time.
