I don't think that the Republican leadership is "pandering" to moderates, I think it is paying them lip-service.

I believe GWB sees himself as president of ALL Americans, not just one party or one interest group. Like all politicians I suppose he has to take care of his big donors first, and of course he wants his base supporters to vote for him, but he also has to govern. And that means governing all America. Not just the red states but the blue states too.

I simply believe people don't know how ot react to a "politician" who does what he said he was going to do. He didn't lie about "compassionate conservativism" as much as we wince when we hear that word.
He didn't hide a domestic agenda until after he took his oath, he was up front with it. President Bush is a man of his word, people don't know how to respons. As much as he would like to be re-elected, I imagine he would get back to "clearing up some brush" in Crawford. The we will all be up Sh!t Creek with President Kerry.
ps. Tom McClintock ran for Tom McClintock. He was no different than Pat Buchanan. They lose. They whine. They take the 1/10th of 1 percent who truly agreed with them when they go.
