Woman's Dying Wish: Bush Defeated

Loved Ones Asked To Donate To Democratic Cause

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- A South Florida woman who died this week had an unusual last request. Instead of flower or contributions in her name to a charity, she asked those who loved her to try to make sure President George W. Bush is not re-elected.

Loved ones said that Joan Abbey was committed to her political passions, even in death.

Abbey was born in Montreal, but lived for many years in Miami Beach and Aventura. Family and friends came from as far away as Canada and California to remember Abbey at the Mount Nebo Jewish Cemetery in Miami.

Abbey, who was a lifelong Democrat, died Monday -- coincidentally on the first day of the Democratic National Convention.

Her sister, Tillie Shapiro, said, "She was just a caring person … She cared about people, and people who were disadvantaged."

Abbey was buried the day after the Democratic convention ended. Her unusual death notice in the Miami Herald said: "You can honor Joan's values by voting against George Bush and contributing to a liberal or Democratic cause."

Abbey's nephew, Martin Shapiro, said, "What she cared most about was improving circumstances in this country... getting rid of George Bush and making this a better country for all people."

Coincidentally, the presiding rabbi, Brett Goldstein, is a registered Democrat but is voting for Bush, and he questioned the timing of Abbey's message at such a sensitive time.

"My contention is that if there's any situation that's sacrosanct, it should be devoid of political ramifications," Goldstein said. "Although people have the opportunity and they can do it if they want to, it is not really appropriate at this time."

Shapiro said, "It was her (Abbey's) essence. It was her core value to try to see this country become a better place and become a more just society. And I think that was the last word she'd want to leave."

Abbey did not want her age known. Many friends said she remained forever young in spirit and staunchly committed to her beliefs.

HOLD THE HELL ON HERE!!!

I seem to recall the SAME damn story coming out in the news media about a Grandma making a Bush loss her dying wish IN 2000 DURING THE GORE CAMPAIGN!!!

The Dummycraps have been holding onto "Herbert Hoover" and "Taxbreaks For THE RICH" for so long that I guess they think they can draw ANYTHING out of moth balls, but THIS little Fox has heard THIS STORY BEFORE!

Canuck commie witch! She wouldn't have lived to 109 if America were like Canada and health care here was like health care there. She probably would've died when Dubya was still in diapers.

Add one more voice in Hades rooting for the bad guys.

Sorry, not supposed to speak ill of the dead. But some dead are just too damned evil.

I'd have some respect for this person if her dying wish is for Kerry to be elected.

Instead her focus is on her hatred of GWB. It's very sad that at the moment right before she will be asking for love and forgivenss, she can conjure none of it in herself.

I can't believe this makes headline news! Ridiculous.

Prayers for your brother. Terminal cancer and he still makes time to do something so good for such a good person as President Bush. He (your brother) sounds like a kind and loving person. "He ain't heavy....he's my brother."
God bless.

Looks like the little kid is handing her his TeleTubbie. Figures, anyone who would let a child be exposed to that homosexual puppet show would have to be a Democrat.

How is this news? An old lady originally from Canada moves to Florida and gets to have her dying political wish broadcast around the world? Journalism at its finest.

"Abbey was born in Montreal, but lived for many years in Miami Beach and Aventura."

But no mention of her being an American citizen.
I wonder if she voted in the last election?
How could this be checked?
And how can her citizenship status be checked?

You are so right. Most of us have good lives apart from our politics. How sad is it that her wishes aren't for children and grandchildren and friends.

And how many people died recently that are the president's supporters? This is so lame.

As a Jew, she should have been buried within 48 hours--this was 4 days. Maybe the family was to busy watching the convention to make arrangements.

Yes, and you see where it has got him. There was recently a poll showing W has even less support among Jewish voters than he did in the last election. Less than 20%. Time to re-think our "Israel first" policy.

Abbey did not want her age known.

I'll take a wild guess..........maybe seventy years or so older than children killed during an abortion; she arrived at that age with no help from the Democrat Party she loves so much.

Wow! That Kreskin is amazing!

On New Year's Eve, I saw a special on Fox with Kreskin. He said without any hesitation that Dean would lose the nomination. Mind you, this was at the height of Dean's popularity before he started pissing everyone off. I was completely astounded when Dean collapsed about 2 weeks later and Kerry won. I don't do psychics, but he has surprised me with how right he is in the past.
