Federal agents raid mosque in Albany

August 5, 2004, 6:48 AM EDT ALBANY, N.Y. -- Federal agents and city police raided a Muslim mosque overnight Wednesday, with armed officers sealing off a block in downtown Albany for several hours.

Authorities declined to immediately discuss the raid at Masjid As-Salam mosque.

An FBI spokesman said a press conference was tentatively set Thursday afternoon in Washington. Some mosque members held morning prayers Thursday on a nearby sidewalk.

WTEN-TV reported two men were arrested and are suspected of providing material support for terrorism. Calls to the U.S. attorney's office were not immediately returned. On Tuesday, William Chase, special agent in charge of the FBI's Albany office, said there had been no terrorism-related arrests in the area and relatively few nationally since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"But I think as time goes on you'll start to see an increased number of prosecutions as law enforcement increases its level of activity and starts looking at some of the ancillary things like financing and those type of things, the things that feed into the system that supports the terrorism," Chase said.

GOOD! I suspect we will see more of these busts/raids if Homeland Security is really doing it's job.

I hope the Feds' don't give Calypso Louie's NOI mosques a pass. Equal justice for all. Has anyone besides myself, noticed how quite the fruits of Islam have been lately? Lock them all up and let them rot if they are involved in a terrorist conspiracy against the USA.

They caught a couple of the fruits of Islam last week crossing from Nebraska to Iowa with marked up maps (not revealed of where), night vision goggles and high powered rifles, among other things. Oh, and of course, a couple of Korans.

Their last names were Baker (the man) and Maguire (the woman, possibly his wife); I don't recall their first names or know what their Black Muslim names were. They were found during a routine traffic stop for seat belt enforcement, when the cops noticed that they seemed much more nervous than a seat belt violation would have warranted.

Suggest to your dour friends on the Left that Ashcroft, the DOJ, and FBI are well on their way to keeping the next Mohammed Atef from carrying out the next multibillion dollar loss, multi-thousand dead "9/11."

Just who is it that wants to keep them from doing those good deeds on behalf of civilization?

From your link on the mosque: Intensive Arabic Class
Inshallah there will be an intensive crash-course on Arabic Fus-ha during the Summer of 2001. This class will be held at Masjid As-Salaam twice a week in the evenings.

They don't update their site very often do they? I'm just wondering if they're trolling for jihadists? Arrgh!

Putting the pieces together.
1. Up security in NY & DC
2. Big raid in England
3. Albany Arrests today
4. Notice of Moussaoui using cell phone
All in one week!!!

Are you saying that the timing of all this is suspicious?

Did Bush know ahead of time and keep it from the American people - especially the elderly?

At the risk or being repetitive (I posted this on related threads several times)...

It has long been time for 24/7/52 surveillance of every mosque in the USA. We need to start organizing local militias to share the duty and equipment; not everyone has a video camera, the primary weapon.

I'll take midnight - 4 AM Monday...

At least every one of them built by Saudi government money --- which is at least 80% of them.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Two leaders of a mosque in Albany, N.Y., were arrested on charges stemming from an alleged plot to help a man they thought was a terrorist purchase a shoulder-fired missile, federal authorities said Thursday.

The men have ties to a group called Ansar al-Islam, which has been linked to the al-Qaida terror network, according to two federal law enforcement authorities speaking on condition of anonymity.

The two arrests came as FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other agents executed search warrants at the Masjid As-Salam mosque and two Albany-area residences, officials said. The men were identified as Yassin Aref, 34, the imam of the mosque, and 49-year-old Mohammed Hoosain, one of the mosque's founders.

According to law enforcement officials, the two are being charged with providing material support to terrorism by participating in a conspiracy to help an individual they believed was a terrorist purchase a shoulder-fired missile.

The individual was in fact working undercover for the government and no missile ever changed hands. Aref and Hoosain were allegedly involved in money-laundering aspects of the plot, the officials said.

The investigation has been going on for a year and is not related to the Bush administration's decision earlier this week to raise the terror alert level for certain financial sector buildings in New York and Washington, the officials said.

In Albany, some mosque members gathered early Thursday outside the institution for morning prayers.

More details about the case were expected to be released later Thursday by the Justice Department in Washington.

A typical up-close view of the enemy within. I have seen those fruits in N.C. standing on the corners peddling their anti-white newspaper. I always keep my glock 40 in plain view. I think it's very comical to see these clowns dressed in a suit and bow-tie. Domestic terrorist in the open saleing their propaganda of anti- white-anti-jewish rhetoric. Excerpt from the article:

U.S. officials have said that Ansar's members are thought to be linked to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian militant whose network is blamed for attacks on U.S. forces and their allies in Iraq.

The two arrests came as FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other agents executed search warrants at the Masjid As-Salam mosque and two Albany-area residences late Wednesday and early Thursday, officials said.

They probably just wanted to fire them into the sky for a Muslim "call to prayer".

I don't think so... For prayer they holler at the top of their lungs over loud speakers... They were just planning a big wedding. The lawyers, ACLU, CAIR and the liberal judges will prove that. Watch and see.

Newsday has updated the story. Among the gems quoted:

"It's totally wrong and totally false and totally a lie," Hossain's wife, Mossamat, said in a phone interview.

She said more than a half-dozen agents stormed the family's apartment at about 1:30 a.m., just as her husband returned from New York City where he had gone to buy a plane ticket to Bangladesh for her mother.
