In the oilfields we had H2S detectors, as hydrogen sulfide is odorless. In the oilfields we had H2S detectors, as hydrogen sulfide is odorless.

We worked around LN2, Hydrozine, UDMH, Aerozine-50, Nitrogen Tetroxide (N2O4), etc.

I am with you on this! You have to be aware at all times!

TECHNICALLY H2S has an odor of rotten eggs....briefly. Then the smell receptors are "paralyzed" or overwhelmed by the gas. This is what makes it so dangerous.

Actually not really. I already knew I was fortunate to have a job I like. However, I worked my ass off in school and at work to get where I am.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound flippant about it.

They probably died due to a lack of air. The reason why sewer workers aerate an area or wear a breathing apparatus when entering manholes and other confined spaces. Excess gas can also eliminate air.

Unfortunatly, not only are the original victims killed but also those trying to help. In addition to aerating and breathing apparatusses (same as scuba), I had my employees also anchored to someone outside with a rope in case of something unforeseen. They could then be pulled to safety.

You are absolutely correct. Worked around it over 32 years. Deadly. Also worked with Chlorine, sulfuric acid, hdydrocloric acid, So2, white, green and black liquor[ not the kind you drink, at least more than once], chlorate etc.. This does not even consider the machinery that will fry you into burnt toast, or pull off your finger, [guilty], hand, arm, leg, head, hair or just wrap your hold body around it while it keeps running and beats you into a lump of furry jelly.

There are thousands of blue collar workers, pipe fitters, welders, machinists, industrial mechanics, carpenters, sheet metal electricians etc. and production workers that work with these types of deadly items dozens of times everyday simply as part of their jobs trying to make a living. The 32 years I worked in the plant I think we lost only five people but there where a good many more very bad injuries.

But then I guess that what we get for being those greedy overpaid union and non-union lazy American workers.
