Ok, this is an old article, but it only goes to point out that our State Department does no favors on the war on terrorism. Either all terrorists are terrorists or none are. You can't have "one man's terrorists is another man's freedom fighter."

Akhmadov has spent the last year living in Andover, Vermont, and Cambridge, Massachusetts

He should be enjoying the hospitality of Uncle Sam in a cell in Gitmo.

Damn straight! He should be knocked off. I wish we could get a hold of his phone bill to see where he has placed calls in the past few months.

Hopefully giving Putin the address so they can send someone to "strike" a terrorist worldwide. Maybe the city council in Berkley will start trembling.

From the article: Daniel Pellathy, program director for the Washington-based American Committee for Peace in Chechnya, said granting Akhmadov asylum in the United States would "dispel the myth" that he is a terrorist. "It legitimizes him as representative of the [Chechen] opposition here in the U.S.," Pellathy said. "He can now go on the lecture circuit, meet with members of the State Department, meet with Congress, become a public and active figure."

Which one of our great memebers of the state department and congress has this terrorist met?

I keep on hearing that the US has permanent interests not permanent friends.... heck, let the State Department at least have interests that are permanent and not waffle on this terrorist crap. We need to occupy Saudi Arabia and Pakistan for then next umpteen years...we as in the Russians, Americans, Indians, Israelis, Brits, Aussies, and Japan.

This reminds me on how my sympathy for the Chechens evolved since the fall of the USSR.

At first, I was very sympathetic and wondered why other former Soviet 'republics' were allowed to form separate sovereign nations, but not Chechenya.

I knew nothing of the demographics -- irrelevant, right?

When the separatists began to abandon guerilla tactics [which are limited to military and infrastructure] and target civilians, my sympathy quickly evaporated.

It wasn't until several years later that I found out that there was a significant number of Muslims in Chechenya. Then I said, "but of course!"

Friend, find one country on the face of this earth where the Muslim minority is not killing the majority for a permanent and separate homeland...I challenge you.

"He should be enjoying the hospitality of Uncle Sam in a cell in Gitmo."

We should turn him over to Russia. Let them decide if he is a terrorist, and deal with him in their own manner.

And our quid pro quo for this action: Get FULLY on board, against ALL muslim terrorism. ALL.

What about Pakistan and Saudi Arabia? They still run the terror camps and finance terrorists world-wide.

It's the damn State Department

Why are you blaming the State Department? This was a Homeland Security Dept decision. Regardless, Bush is in charge of both.

Homeland security does not grant assylm...State Department does.

You're wrong about that.

DHS Organization

Citizenship & Immigration Services

Serving Visitors and New Citizens

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has administered the nation's immigration laws since March 1, 2003 when the Immigration and Naturalization Service became part of DHS. Through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), DHS continues the tradition of welcoming immigrants into the country by administering services such as immigrant and nonimmigrant sponsorship; adjustment of status; work authorization and other permits; naturalization of qualified applicants for U.S. citizenship; and asylum or refugee processing. Immigration enforcement, which is the responsibility of the Directorate of Border and Transportation Security, includes preventing aliens from entering the country unlawfully, detecting and removing those who are living in the U.S. unlawfully, and preventing terrorists and other criminal aliens from entering or residing in the United States. The Department makes certain that America continues to welcome visitors and those who seek opportunity within our shores while excluding terrorists and their supporters.

Heck, read the article that you posted:

Akhmadov was initially granted asylum in April by a U.S. immigration judge in Boston.... But the Homeland Security Department appealed the decision in June on the grounds that Moscow accused him of involvement in terrorism. After an investigation determined that Akhmadov had no connection to terrorism, the department withdrew its appeal last month, said Ross Knocke, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a division of Homeland Security.
