Deep down they don't have the right mentality for being Muslims.

True, Zoroastrianism was much more their style. And they separated themselves from the Arab Muslims by insisting on their own Shia version of Islam. Persians do make uncomfortable Muslims.

Most Persians I know are either Zoroastrians or non-religious and joke about Islam all the time!

It's a beautiful thing!

He is of the 'help us clean up our self-made mess and then get out' crowd.

D2A (great screen name, btw!), I think even a cursory read of the history of Iran, even nothing more than, say, 1970 to 1979, would make it rather clear that the mess is anything but self-made. There were significant external influences pushing affairs along toward the overthrow of the Shah and the subsequent struggle for power that ultimately the mullahs won.

zEven Jimmy Carter has a bow or two to make for his contribution to this state of affairs, as has been noted in other FR articles.

Look to Carter for the big reason that Iran lost its way.

It doesn't seem to dawn on him that it is they who need to enact change from within.
__________

Your comment begs the question...why is your comment true of Iran but not Iraq?

Just a question

He means a couple things:

1) It is better for everyone if they change it rather than us.
2) If we change it, it won't be to save little girls from the hangmen. That will only be a byproduct.

I think you misunderstand what happened in 1979 in Iran. Here's a brief summary :

20-30% of the population (radicals of different sorts, communists included) wanted to get rid of the Shah. The Shah's Savak's main targets were the communists and radicals. When the uprising increased, the Shah, who had been the U.S.'s biggest ally in the middle east, asked for help from Carter. Carter lied to the Shah and supported Khomeini. The Iranians as majority, wanted to keep a democratic gov't and had one for about 6 to 9 mos after the Shah was encouraged by Carter to leave. Then Khomeini took over and immediately killed thousands, including most of the Shah's people, who had been promised safety, by Carter.
The vast majority of the Iranian people NEVER wanted Khomeini running the country.
The reason we have an inaccurate picture of what happened is because of how the media portrayed things then, and continues to hide the truth about Carter, now. Carter is responsible for the downfall of Iran, the murder and torture of untold 10's of thousands, and problems with terrorism we face today. He is the reason that Iran is not our ally anymore, and why the people there have suffered under a theological dictatorship for the past 25 years.
Seeing as how Carter was a U.S. president, it's pretty amazing that the people of Iran are pro-U.S. after all they've endured.
