Questions are being raised about the authenticity of newly unearthed memos that say President Bush's National Guard commander believed Mr. Bush was shirking his duties.
The memos, which were obtained by CBS News' 60 Minutes, say Mr. Bush ignored a direct order from a superior officer and lost his status as a Guard pilot because he failed to meet military performance standards and undergo a required physical exam.
The network defended the autheniticity of the memos, saying its experts who examined the memos concluded they were authentic documents produced by Lt. Col. Jerry Killian.
But Killian's son, one of Killian's fellow officers and an independent document examiner questioned the memos.
Gary Killian, who served in the Guard with his father and retired as a captain in 1991, said he doubted his father would have written an unsigned memo which said there was pressure to "sugar coat" Mr. Bush's performance review.
"It just wouldn't happen," he said. "No officer in his right mind would write a memo like that."
The personnel chief in Killian's unit at the time also said he believes the documents are fake.
"They looked to me like forgeries," Rufus Martin told the Associated Press. "I don't think Killian would do that, and I knew him for 17 years." Killian died in 1984.
Independent document examiner Sandra Ramsey Lines said the memos looked like they had been produced on a computer using Microsoft Word software. Lines, a document expert and fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, pointed to a superscript a smaller, raised "th" in "111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron" as evidence indicating forgery.

I just want to jump through the screen and strangle this liar! Grrrrrrrrr...
(Ratherlies, that is)
Is their a coup underway at CBS?
Well, Dan was less than compelling in his defense of the docs. BTW, why did their document expert remind of the guy who testified for the dems in the Flordia chad case ;)
I can't believe they admitted these were photocopies given to them.
He seems to be following the Clinton strategy - lie, lie, lie, accuse, accuse, accuse until a new story takes the headlines.
My guess is he's suffering from the Al Gore disease. This will really send him over the edge. The only people saying the documents are real these days are Rathers "friends."
Remember when the 2000 Florida election was called for Gore? Rather said "It looks like our side is winning."
Try calling 1-212-975-4321 and ask to speak to Dan Rather... You'll get connected to some punk junior producer, but at least you'll get a chance to express your disdain for Mr. Rather and the great news gathering organization at CBS News.
Repeat after me fellow Dems "Mr. Bush was shirking duties", "Mr. Bush was shirking duties" . . .
There are two polls on the subject on CNN.
Should Dan Rather and CBS News reveal the sources of the Bush memos?
Yes 35% 282 votes
No 65% 519 votes
Total: 801 votes
Do you think the recently released memos on President Bush's National Guard service are authentic?
Yes 52% 65829 votes
No 48% 61920 votes
Total: 127749 votes
If you are so inclined, CNN needs a little FR power!
Your link doesn't go to anything even remotely resembling your post. What is up?
I guess if they reproduce it often enough it will become a full confession by Bush that he was AWOL from the age of 3 to 33, that he was and is a slacker and he really doesn't deserve to be reelected.
Sounds like another 60 Minutes episode is being scripted.
Where did these documents come from? What did 'Dan-Dan the newsman' know and when did he know it?
Is that the beginning and the end of Strong's credentials? Is he part of this story simply because he was around the office at the time?
Who the hell is he? What does he do? And where is he coming from?
Is he, for example, a Travis County, Texas Democrat? Might he know Ben Barnes? And Bill Burkett?
