Where are all the girlie men who wrung their hands in outrage because Ari Fleischer once said that Bush would sign the AWB renewal if it hit his desk?
It was the Republican Congress's job to keep it from hitting his desk, and they did.
Bush ignored the AWB renewal to death. That was the plan. It worked beautifully.

I didn't have quite the faith in Congess that you did. A year ago, I would have said that an extension was close to a sure thing. I'm glad I was wrong. Political ploy or not, I'm also glad W never had the opportunity to sign it. I believe W is an honest man, and he never gave me any reason to believe he was lying about this. Given how horrendously bad Kerry is on the 2nd Amendment and national security, I would have voted for Bush anyway, but now I can do so without the AWB cloud over it, and I'm very happy about that.

I was one of those. GWB did the same thing with CFR, and the House and Senate failed us... and GWB was true to his word, and violated his oath of office. There was no reason to believe it couldn't happen again... and there's also no reason to give GWB any credit for this sunset... but I'll be happily buying a few choice items on Tuesday.

They are probably patting themselves on the back for writing letters to the WH and Congress, credibly threatening to stay home in November if the Ban is renewed. The successful result is not evidence that they were wrong, it is evidence that their efforts were effective.
