Congress caves in on weapons ban (Kansas City Star editorial)

Congress caves in on weapons ban

The gun lobby flexed its muscles, and congressional leaders blinked.

As a result, a 10-year-old ban on the manufacture and sale of assault weapons will expire at midnight Monday — unless Republican leaders in Congress change their minds.

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay says there's no reason to bring legislation extending the ban up for a vote because it doesn't have enough votes to pass.

That seems like a dubious claim. The House legislation has 136 co-sponsors, including Reps. Karen McCarthy, Richard Gephardt and William Clay of Missouri and Dennis Moore of Kansas.

House Democrats differ with DeLay; they say the votes are there for an extension. DeLay personally opposes the ban, however. But shouldn't the rest of the members of Congress go on the record as to whether they support or oppose the ban?

Maybe that's the rub. Since the 1994 legislation went into effect, the National Rifle Association has focused on congressional members who supported it. Several lawmakers lost re-election bids because of the NRA's opposition. And the NRA has opposed any extension or expansion of the ban.

Most Americans, however, support restrictions on the military-style weapons covered by the 1994 law. The nation's police officers have been among the strongest advocates of the ban.

And according to a survey by the non-partisan National Annenberg Election Survey at the University of Pennsylvania, 57 percent of people with a gun in their household are OK with banning the weapons, which became popular with criminals because they are designed to be shot from the hip and to fire many rounds in rapid succession.

One argument against the ban is that it simply created a market for weapons with similar features that weren't covered by the legislation. That's an argument, however, for expanding the ban — not eliminating it.

Congress has a chance to reduce the number of dangerous weapons on the streets. Too bad it is letting the chance slip away.

Did this paper complain about Senate cloture rules that prevented up or down votes for confirmation of federal judicial appointments?

What a great coincidence:

Fox news reported today that the crime is the lowest ever recorded.

I guess all those concealed carry permits are making our towns safe for all citizens, even the leftist that hate America.

Even if this would not pass, I believe that the bill - with NO RIDERS - should be put to a registered vote to let all Americans know who is NOT a true American who believes in the Constitution of the United States.

That says it all right there. These people will not stop.

Dang, don't scare me like that! I thought from the headline that an AWB extension had been passed. Scared me to death, until I realized the perspective of the headline writer, and figured out what was going on.

The KC Star has it wrong. It is too late for Congress to act. The way the law is worded, the ban is effectively repealed at 00:00:01 on Monday, September 13th (or in other worse, less than two hours from now, EST). The House doesn't reconvene until 12:30 p.m. tomorrow... more than half a day after the ban has died. At that point, they can't vote to "extend the current ban" because there will be no ban. All they could do is pass a new ban.

I've got this to say to those Gun Grabbing NAZIS on the left side of this issue, especially the Blood dancing ghoul Karen McCarthy.

If Tiny Daschle can play god in the Senate by holding up Judicial nominees with some unwritten 60 vote rule as the minority party, you all can go suck wind in the house because the Right isn't run by Castrated choir boys like the Senate.

Fact is Tom Delay is putting the wood up side your head and most Americans believe you deserve it.

More bullshit from the marxists. They will not stop until all of US are disarmed. Word. Take it to the bank (that cheats you all the time).

I have updated my FMCDH (From My Cold Dead Hands) sign-off with the addition of (BITS).....Blood In The Streets, which I foresee coming soon, due to the enormous increase of the Marxist progressive movement being shoved down the throat of this failing REPUBLIC through the Judicial tyranny of fiat law, the passing of unconstitutional laws by the Legislative and Executive branches of our government and the enormous tax burden placed upon the average American to support unconstitutional programs put forth by Marxist ideology.

AK-47s (I'm guessing that's what they mean by "assault rifles," at least this time around) are not designed to be fired from the hip. That's only true in Hollywood, where the blanks don't give a kick and launch one's shoulder out of its socket.

I don't doubt that LA gangsters fire them that way, and is also why they tend to miss their prey and hit some innocent 6 year old sitting in her living room instead.

September 6, 2004 -- **BREAKING** In Yesterday's Lies: Steve Pitkin and the Winter Soldiers, Scott Swett tells the story of a former VVAW member and participant in the Winter Soldier Investigation who states that John Kerry and others pressured him to give false testimony about American atrocities in Vietnam. After more than 33 years, Pitkin is the first Winter Soldier "witness" to file a legal affadavit regarding that event...

My name is Steve Pitkin, age 20, from Baltimore. I served with the 9th Division from May of '69 until I was airvaced in July of '69. I'll testify about the beating of civilians and enemy personnel, destruction of villages, indiscriminate use of artillery, the general racism and the attitude of the American GI toward the Vietnamese. I will also talk about some of the problems of the GIs toward one another and the hassle with officers.
