Jet makes emergency landing at O'Hare

An American Airlines jet made an emergency landing this afternoon at O'Hare International Airport after experiencing engine problems shortly after takeoff. Authorities said the plane landed safely and there were no injuries among those aboard.
Black marks could be seen on the side of a left engine as the plane sat on a runway, and passengers were being let off through a front exit and onto the tarmac.
The flight was American Airlines 1374 to Philadelphia with 107 people on board, airline spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan said.
Fagan said the engine was damaged and there was fire inside the engine, but the cause had not immediately been determined.

Just listening on wls, they said it was probably a bird strike.
Could have been a lot worse than this.

Yikes. Wasn't there a recent MD80 that shredded a compressor on takeoff and the shrapnel killed a little girl and her mom in the row 31 or whatever it is? I HATE sitting radial to those things spinning at godawful RPM!
