Matt Drudge just announced that CBS will admit, maybe as soon as tomorrow, that they were 'deceived' and are launching an intensive, in-depth investigation.

My research into the command link for the memos will not be affected one bit by this news. An utterly disgraced story was dumped on the American people as truth and it needs to be run down. Too little, too late MSM.

If CBS wanted to negotiate with Burkett they wouldn't have sent Dan.

Ah! But! I think Dan's is so full of himself he thinks he can convince this guy it's the best thing to do! That would need to come from Dan himself to make it look like he is sincere don't ya think.

Yeah. He'll have him say something like he got a mysterious phone call from someone he'd never met in his life. Then he'll make a big deal about Buckhead debunking the documents within hours. I'd say it's pretty likely.

I sure hope you are raising children! Sounds like a great home to grow up in.

Yes. Both are college grads. Diana is a Ohi Beta Kap from Lehigh. Jeffrey is an engineering major grad from Boston U. (I know...lib-town).

Irregardless, they do not misunderestimate the series of the hugh impoutance of this lection. Even though they live on the Left Coast, they are staunch Right Wing Vast Conspiracy Re-Publicans. When Jeffrey is home and sees Kerry on TV, he takes my AR off the wall and sights Kerry's shnoze. Good thing I keep the mags in the desk. Otherwise the TV would be blotto.

Hey guys, y'all keep your powder dry. And PRAY for W and our troops. And piss on Kerry's excuse for being a 'patriot' of our country. That rat-bastard should be sacrificed upside down.... I'd pay for the nails and admission fees for the thousands of Americans who died due to his treason and traitorist act 30 years ago. I hate his guts!!!! / rant sorry. At least I can maybe go to sleep now.

If Rather and company come out and say that the documents are fake, but we still think or feel that their accusations are correct, that would be a new low for journalistic standards. The "I can't prove it, but I believe it" argument would dramatically demonstrate that Rather wasn't taken on path he didn't want to travel. Which in turn, we prove that CBS has a huge liberal bias. Surely, CBS wouldn't allow Dan to completely sink CBS?

Maybe by the debates, Rather can have someobdy write up some documents, about Kofi's and Saddam's "Money for Korrupt Men Wearing Kaftans, Riding in Black Limos in NYC."

Dan can explain why the UN have credibility left, whatsoever.

Why Kerry's notions about us taking counsel from France and Russia and China, before we do what we think is in our best interest, after 9/11/2001 kills over 3,000 of our citizens, on our shores.

John Kerry sure better get his nuanced thinking Kap on straight, and get to work with the compexities of these confusing matters.

Because I think GWB will cut straight to the heart of these matters, with some pared-down-to-the-main-points Texican lingo.

There may not be very much heart left in JFK, for delving into Bush's military career, either. Now that CBS and ole Dan flubbed that one.

My prediction: they'll admit they were "deceived" and then spend the rest of the show pointing the finger where it really belongs.

BURKETT: And then one night a mysterious man in a trench coat and a Janet Reno mask appeared at my back door and handed me the documents. He said he was giving them to me because he knew I was a true patriot, someone who'd fought the evil neocon empire all his life. I was so proud to be chosen to help our great nation. I never dreamed that they were fake. I mean, I've always known that Bush shirked his duties. Always. So how could I know they were fakes when they were just stating the truth. (breaks down sobbing)How could I know?

DAN: Sir, this reporter understands. Even I was fooled by them and I'm sharper than my old Aunt Nelly's toenails. Now, can you describe this mysterious man further? Tall, short? Blond? Brunette?

BURKETT (shaking head) No. It was too dark. I never got a good look at him. I did get a glimpse of his car, though, as he drove off into the Texas night. It was an SUV with a bad muffler and there was a Jesus fish on the back. Right next to the NRA bumper sticker.

DAN: Hmm. A gas-guzzling, gun-loving, polluting, Jesus-freak. Important clues as we work to determine who perpetrated this heinous fraud on America. We'll be back right after these messages.

Cue the latest DNC attack ad.

CBS is sending a trial balloon.

1. Right wingers (acting anonymously)created documents and fed them to Burkett.

2. Burkett believed them BECAUSE THEY ACURATELY RECREATE THE MEMOS HE SAW IN THE TRASHBIN. He is unimpeachable because he is the only person to have seen the originals.

3. CBS believed it because Burkett was so sure. The quality of the documents was so poor, they relied on Burkett's memory of the CONTENT.

4. Right wingers identified them sooo quickly because they created them in the first place.

5. CBS actually has done quality reporting because they have exposed the hoax that almost fooled them.

This, I believe, will be Blather's conclusion in his interview with Burkett.

Yeah. He'll have him say something like he got a mysterious phone call from someone he'd never met in his life.

I hope he tries that. Pulling phone records is incredibily trivial these days. I'd love nothing more than to catch Rather in yet another lie.

Then he'll make a big deal about Buckhead debunking the documents within hours. I'd say it's pretty likely.

I doubt that CBS will even make reference to Buckhead. The Leftist corporate "mainstream" (sic) media is VERY scared about legitimizing either Conservatives, Free Republic, or the nebulous "blogosphere."

Yes, deceived by yourselves--self-deception. It's called denial, and it's the most dangerous thing in the world.

Does this mean CBS will review all stories done by this producer and see if she has used false information before? It throws into question a lot of their past reporting. If they don't fire Dan Rather they aren't serious about regaining any credibility, not that they ever had any.

I thought Burkett basically admitted to being the source when he said that "we have reassembled your records", and that he in turn took them to Cleland after getting the run around while trying to contact the Kerry campaign.

So if that is the chain of custody - Burkett, Cleland, Kerry campaign - then obviously Rather got them from the Kerry Kamp. Burkett has already taken away the possiblity of denial for CBS. They have nowhere to run or hide now.

Good point, the only way CBS can make a clean break is to do a story on how the documents came through the Democratic party. I think the likelyhood of that is less than zero.

I think this is what will happen:

1. ol' DandyDan will float some completely unsubstantiated allegation that they were deceived by a right-wing partisan trickster.

2. This will give the Dims a chance to continue to claim that GW didn't meet his obligations.

3. CBS will refuse to reveal their source even though that source somehow 'deceived' them.

Alright. What FREEPER has it altogether to do a timeline of this all, starting with Rather's question raised @ the Republican convention if he thought turnabout would be fair play [since much had been raised about Kerry's military record, would it fair to raise questions about Bush's].

We need a timeline to pass on to media outlets so they can get a clue & start seeing the big picture. I think we need a new training school called, the FREEPER School of Bloggerism [Hey, journals and its accompanying 'ism' began to evaporate a decade ago].

CBS is reporting "feelings" instead of "facts".

Look for the reporting to continue to avoid facts in favor of emoting:

Reporter to CBS spokesperson:

"How do you feel having to have your credibility questioned?"

CBS spokesperson: "We're hurting. We've felt we've been deceived. Betrayed. Surely, our viewers have been snookered a time or two."

Reporter: "How much was Dan Rather involved in CBS' vulnerability to be deceived?"

CBS spokesperson: Pay no attention to that 72-year-old man behind the curtain trying to bring the President down. He is the great & powerful anchor wizard of Texas, from the Land of Van Oz. How was the Wizard to know that Burkett did not have a brain? That the Democratic leadership has no heart? And that the Democratic platforms are full of straw?

CBS News plans to issue a statement, perhaps as early as today, acknowledging that it was misled on the purported National Guard memos the network used to charge that President Bush received favored treatment 30 years ago.

Absurd, and delicious. They're still trying to save 'the story.'

And in doing so, they're sucking all the oxygen from Kerry's campaign.

Burkett hasn't spoken to anyone but CBS since it came out he was probably the source for the forged memos. As soon as their name was mentioned in the press, an innocent person would have immediately been on the phone calling all over, or having a representative call all over in an attempt to clear their name. They'd be on the TV repeatedly or talking to the press to try to countermand any misgivings about their involvement in the incident. Burkett hasn't done any of that. In fact, the only one he's chosen to speak to is Rather, the one he originally turned the memos over to. That's like Major Andre interviewing Benedict Arnold about the (Arnold) documents that ended up in his (Andre's) boots.

"They won't do any such thing; the only reason Rather would go interview Burkett is if he thinks it will help HIM."

Right. I'm assuming we'll be hearing the story about the Bush documents being destroyed again.

Someone on Fox News yesterday discussed CBS being upset that the White House didn't tell them the documents were bad after they provided them with copies. CBS is claiming they went with the story when the White House didn't challenge the documents. Never mind how many experts told them the documents were bad, they'll try to somehow pin this on the White House.

As Rush says, "The CYA is in progress."

This is disgusting, SOOOO predictable, and barring a miracle totally unprovable.
