You know as much as I agree with your succinct point I can't help but feel that a lot of people around the world share responsibility for what he did for all those years. Neither the horrible human rights conditions in his country or his willingness to use WMD's on his enemies or even his own population. And yet, even with widespread acknowledgment of his despicable history, President Bush takes heat for removing his regime from power. Saddam must bear the ultimate repsonsibility for his deeds, but that blame must be shared by those who would not lift a hand to stop him and in fact actively worked to prevent those with ability and the incentive to deal with him from doing so. Not only did countries such as France, Germany and Russia interfere with our determination to rid the world of this creature, they benefited at the expense of the Iraqi people by being part of the UN's Food for Oil program.

Those in my age group will remember the famous Sin City status of Phenix City, Alabama in the early 50's. Everyone knew what was going on there but no one inside the power structure was interested in a solution or willing to risk the danger of addressing it. It's the same situation, but on a worldwide basis, with Iraq. In the end it took outsiders from the state and federal governments to put an end to what had been going on for years with local approval.

As bad as Saddam was, and as much as he deserves to die of old age in a sparse hot as hell jail cell somewhere, alone and despised by the world, a LOT of others will stand before the segment throne with him to share in his eternal punishment.

I was heartened to hear on the news this morning that the Iraqis expect the trial to be brief. No Slobodon Milosevich grandstanding for Saddam. Just in, out and on to the gallows.

A saying just struck me... "people get the government they deserve."

I then compared our hatred of Saddam for the gassing of men, women, and children to the desire many express to see the men, women, and children of Fallujah vaporized. Saddam was bad when he did it but we would be good?

I guess I will catch hell for that statement, and please don't try to presume my opinions because you will likely fail, but it is kind of ironic don't you think.

Yes, there's a very odd change in his behavior here. He and his cruel sons didn't show any mercy for people who begged not to be thrown alive into giant plastic shredders. Now he's pleading for mercy from the family and countrymen of those pour souls who were shredded alive. I don't expect them to show much sympathy for Saddam.
