Just how many blacks are there in New Mexico???????? Not many. We have lived in many areas of the country, but I must say the most non-black place was New Mexico. I was a white, disenfranchised citizen in New Mexico. I believe my voter registration was misplaced because I checked the Republican box on the form. And I don't think race/ethnicity had anything to do with it because it is very difficult to determine what ethnicity someone is in New Mexico based on name.

But individual STATES might.

Additionally, Florida is one of 14 states that prohibit ex-felons from voting. Seven percent of the electorate but 16 percent of black voters in that state are disenfranchised.

So, change the law. Better yet, DON'T COMMIT A FELONY.

On a related note, I am happy to report that as new residents of the SWING state of Ohio, my husband and I have thus far been mailed voter registration forms three different times. Once from the board of elections, twice from the Republican Party and ZERO from the Dems.

As a Florida resident, I can attest to the dirty tricks used by the Democratic Party in the 2000 election. The counties in question all had Democratic Election Supervisors and had the help of our Supreme Court here in Florida. After reading our election laws, anyone would conclude that Katherine Harris did what was legally correct and our Supreme Court did not. The U.S. Supreme Court HAD to step in and stop the illegality of the many, many recounts. The papers here told the real story. The mainstream media did not.

In Ga ONE of the following is required:

(1) a valid Georgia driver's license;
(2) a valid identification card issued by a branch, department, agency, or entity of the State of Georgia, any other state, or the United States authorized by law to issue personal identification;
(3) a valid United States passport;
(4) a valid employee identification card containing a photograph of the elector and issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the United States government, this state, or any county, municipality, board, authority, or other entity of this state;
(5) a valid employee identification card containing a photograph of the elector and issued by any employer of the elector in the ordinary course of such employer's business;
(6) a valid student identification card containing a photograph of the elector from any public or private college, university, or postgraduate technical or professional school located within the state of Georgia;
(7) a valid Georgia license to carry a pistol or revolver;
(8) a valid pilot's license issued by the Federal Aviation Administration or other authorized agency of the United States;
(9) a valid United States military identification card;
(10) a certified copy of the elector's birth certificate;
(11) a valid social security card;
(12) certified naturalization documentation;
(13) or a certified copy of court records showing adoption, name, or sex change;
(14) A copy of a utility bill;
(15) A bank statement (will be kept confidential);
(16) A government check or payment with name and address; or
(17) A government document that shows the name and address of the elector.
Additionally, failure to provide such does NOT prevent the person from voting:

If an elector is unable to produce any of the required identification, the elector shall sign a statement under oath in a form approved by the Secretary of State, separate and distinct from the elector's voter certificate, swearing or affirming that he or she is the person identified on the elector's voter certificate. Such person shall be allowed to vote without undue delay. Falsely swearing or affirming such statement under oath is punishable as a felony.

If your name is found on the voter list, you will be issued a a voter access card and admitted into a voting booth to cast your vote.

I watched a couple of the responses to this thread and some of you freepers are going overboard. The gist of the Reuters article is crap. Pure and unadulterated. A close family member of mine was a convicted felon. We grew up in Miami and had first row seats to the Cuban boat lift. It was not pretty. Nonetheless, we are products of a South Fla. upbringing and my brother choose the wrong path. He did his time and upon release tried to become a productive member of society. He went thru all of the B.S. of being a convicted felon but prevailed to become an honest hardworking family man. He applied numerous times for a pardon, which would erase the conviction and allow him to vote and own firearms. He was turned down numerous times. After 10 years he finally got a lawyer and had the lawyer appeal and then he was pardoned. Our feelings on the matter was that if the governor felt he, my brother, could convince a lawyer to take his case and show the lawyer that he had been following the law and was a productive member of society, that he should pardon him. Be it right are wrong, that is how we felt it went down. Just maybe, and I think this is the case, all of those convicted felons in the Reuters story are, probably more than likely, not productive members of society.
