Oakland halts DUI checkpoints after Hispanic leaders complain

OAKLAND, Calif. The Oakland Police Department has halted its use of D-U-I checkpoints after the city's Hispanic leaders complained that the roadblocks were ensnaring too many illegal immigrants.

D-U-I checkpoints allow police officers to demand drivers' licenses and proof of insurance. City leaders agree the roadblocks are an effective way to get drunken drivers off the streets.

But Hispanic community leaders and City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente complained that the checkpoints were making life miserable for illegal immigrants who aren't licensed to drive but otherwise obey the law.

Police Chief Richard Word has ordered a month-long moratorium on the checkpoints while the department drafts new guidelines.

But City Councilmember Larry Reid says stopping the D-U-I checkpoints threatens public safety.

A Geography lesson is in order for you. The border is a few miles south. (Find a friend with a map).

I agree that it is insane to stop this because the illegals have complained. However, I am real leary of giving the police the power to stop and arrest people without cause.

So if I get pulled over for boozin' and cruisin', BUT I HAVE a license, citizenship, proof of insurance, and my car is up to date on inspections, then they should just let me go. I may be driving drunk, but I'm otherwise obeying the law.

Consulate sends message on rumors
http://www.gazette.com/display.php?sid=1089062

TheThe Mexican Consulate in Denver began receiving reports about citywide raids during the Fourth of July weekend. That was the same time the Colorado Springs Police Department set up DUI checkpoints.

The Mexican Consulate in Denver sent out letters in an attempt to quell rumors and calm Hispanics worried that immigration officials are rounding up illegal immigrants in Colorado Springs.

In the letter, the consulate asked the public to inform the office of concrete examples of any immigration roundup so they can investigate.

A joke. No, they're here to be a burden on our society, to take jobs from Americans, to depress wages locally and on and on. But The Corporate types want them here as a substitute for slaves. So, the Politicians and cops bend over. Shadowrun.

City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente and Police Chief Richard Word must be the girlie men that Arnold has been talking about lately. This Police Chief is a sissy. I feel sorry for the police officers that have to work for him. They can't even do their job because of the political cowardness of the Chief Richard Word.

Seems to me the easist thing for the Police Chief of Oakland to do is to continue the DUI checkpoints but issue a directive to his officers that no drunk Mexicans are to be detained.

That should solve the problem.
