I used to love that one. My favorite out of her songs.

Too bad she let herself go though. I'm sure you know DIJV, that her profession takes alot of discipline and taking care of yourself to keep top form.

I wonder if Chaka is any relation to Jenjis?

Oh my gosh, Aretha's HUGE.

But it's sad about Chaka, she was so cool looking in her early years.

Back in the 70's, she could melt a cheese sandwich from across the room.

No kidding! I'm a chick and she made me hot.

In my prime, I had a cute shape, a nice mixed-girl curly 'fro going on, and wore hippie clothes. Every now and then I like to make my son run to his room by telling him how his mom used to wear earrings w/feathers like Chaka Kahn, and how his dad thought mom could give Chaka a run for her money. (that's how he got here) : )

Fatalis --Hate to throw a wrench in a great question, but according to my Billboard listing, the Lettermen version peaked at number 12 in 1969, although the other two versions did make the Top 10 in their decades. Before I looked that up, I was going to guess "Do You Wanna Dance" which also came close (the Bobby Freeman version hit number five in 1959, The Beach Boys version went to number 12 in 65 and Bette Midler took it to 17 in 1973. Also, as far as I have been able to figure out, there is only one artist who had a song in the Billboard Top 40 in each decade from the 50s through the 80s -- amazingly enough, Cliff Richard!! There may be others, but I have never found one.

Her sister sang with a group called Undisputed Truth that had a hit in the early 70s called "Smiling Faces Sometimes."

I have to agree. Back in the '70's she was one of the curviest women alive.

No, "Ain't Nobody" was Chaka. Definitely. (Though Ashford and Simpson are responsible for some pretty cool stuff.)

And the only "Street Life" I'm familiar with is the one recorded by the Crusaders, with Randy Crawford singing ("I play the street life/'cause there's no place I can go/street life/it's the only life I know"). Is there another? (I know of another version with Joe Sample and Lalah Hathaway, but...) I know they put out some sort of thing with "Street Life" on one side and a Chaka tune on the other...hmmmmm.

I don't really know that. A lot of my friends were of the opinion that Aretha Franklin didn't sound as good when she was thinner - and then you look at people like Jennifer Holliday and Luther Vandross (up/down/up/down) - I don't really know if it has that much to do with it, honestly.
