Disgraced CBS newsman Dan Rather accused the White House on Saturday of trying to "smear" him after he used forged documents in a bid to discredit President Bush's National Guard record.
Speaking at a media forum in New York City, Rather insisted, "I don't have a political agenda." "I'm an independent journalist," he claimed, in quotes picked up by the Washington Post.
Rather pledged that he wouldn't give in to his critics, whom he said were themselves guilty of "bias."
The embattled newsman denied reports that he would step down as anchor of the "CBS Evening News" anytime soon, vowing to "not to give up the fight" to clear his name.
"NBC Nightly News" anchorman Tom Brokaw, a fellow panelist, offered supportive words for his colleague, and attacked Rather's critics on the Internet for waging, "a kind of political jihad against Dan Rather and CBS News that is quite outrageous."
"When it comes to fraudulence, forgeries and claims that cannot be supported, that's where you see an enormous harm being done to the country," he complained.
Brokaw singled out the Media Research Center's L. Brent Bozell, whom the network newsman said was "doing as much damage as he can, and I choose that word carefully, to the credibility of the news divisions."
Also on hand to defend Rather was "ABC World News Tonight" anchorman Peter Jennings, who explained why anchormen like his CBS colleague sometimes seemed to take the side of the enemy in their news coverage.
"[It's] not a natural instinct for those of us in the establishment media to cheer the country on," Jennings said.
The man is completely delusional.
The White House doesn't have to do anything to smear Rather. Rather is doing too good a job smearing himself.

The times have changed we are watching "them"....they had better be unbiased and tow the line.....we will not relent in MAKING the MSM report fair and unbalanced ....no propanda or you pay...we are not letting up!!!!

The fact he is not, is proof that he is a LIAR!
The fact that he has not demanded Kerry sign form 180 is proof Rather is a LIAR!
Jennings, isn't he a Canadian? I would expect him to back up anything that smears America or Americans. Broke-All is trying to cover his own kiester in case he gets caught doing the same thing. They are losing their monopoly on the news and they can't stand it.
Jennings only natural instinct is to be anti-American, which he says he learned at his mother's knee.

Tiny Tom and Peter the Putz can defend Dan the insane all they want. Now Brokow seems to be having his Dean moment and Petey is still trying to get his facts straight. It seems he thinks this is the first time Rather ever made a "mistake".
Wait a minute...YES DAN! We are out to get you! The White House knows all about you! They can see you on TV....They know where you live....They watch you day in and day out....ALL OF THE TIME! You had better pack up and move out of the country...HURRY!

Rather should not only be fired, he should be indicted immediately.
That's wrong. Bozell is trying to help the networks to regain their credibility by telling them how to do it. The problem is that the networks refuse to accept legitimate criticism.
These MSM anchors are all arrogant and biased left. Their body language and voice inflections gives them away every time!

Jennings statement said it all, we will not cheer our country on.... I wonder what our troops think of that line.
