Thank you for your list of additional information on the Kerry discharge question. I must say that when I had no success in tracking down further information from the author's own web site, it made me very suspicious. I would have thought that if anyone had hard evidence of a discharge paper, later than the 1978 copy on Kerry's own home page, it would have made front page news.
I guess the right wing also has it's own versions of Dan Rather's Burkett when it comes to dreaming up incriminating evidence.

My guess-timate is that John Kerry did not ask to resign, and there is some probability that he fell into a pool of officers who were roughly and/or loosely contientious objectors, about whom the Navy did not wish to complete a less than Honorable Discharge. The group administratively languished. I don't think so. I was a naval officer at the same time and received a similar letter. I resigned my commission in Nov 1972 after spending almost 8 years on active duty and was transferred into the Standby Reserves. I received my Honorable Discharge on Feb 16, 1978, the same date as Kerry who went into the Standby Reserves in 1972. It is part of the administrative process as an officer transitions through the Reserve system. Based on my personal experience, I don't buy any of the less than Honorable Discharge nonsense or a Carter pardon.

Kerry was separated in 1978. He was discharged in 2001. Service members get DD214s when they are separated and when they are discharged. You couldn't be more wrong. Kerry received his honorable discharge on Feb 16, 1978. He was released from active duty on Jan 3, 1970. You receive a DD214 when you are released from active duty. Kerry amended his DD214 in March 2001 using a DD215 to update information in his record.

The actual question is why anyone would go to the trouble to request formal separation from SecNav. The reason is you don't have to request a formal separation. Kerry was released from the Standby Reserves by a Navy Board, which makes that decision. No action is required.

Page 2 of the document (towards the bottom) lists kerry's medals that he "aquired".
He must be SO proud of that Silver Star with a combat "V", since he is probably the only person EVER awarded one in the whole military history of the United States.
...but he WAS a HERO after all, so maybe he "deserved" it??

I wonder if we FReeped Jimmy Carter and asked him as an individual of "Honesty, Integrity and seeker of the Truth" why he granted the H.D. to Kerry in 1978?
I'd say Jimmy got some x-plain to do.
