Detroit, Michigan — In 2000, George W. Bush won the presidency because West Virginia, a reliably Democratic state went his way. In 2004, President Bush could secure a big win in the electoral-college by picking off Michigan, another blue state that John Kerry must win to have any chance at the presidency.

It is home to a large population of Polish Catholics, many of whom depend on the auto industry for their livelihoods. As an east-coast liberal, Kerry has spent much of his Senate career pandering to left-wing environmentalists who despise the cars and trucks made in Michigan. In 2002, Kerry proposed legislation to raise fuel-economy standards by 50 percent. His legislation was so draconian that the UAW and Michigan Democratic Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow worked with Republicans to kill it on the Senate floor.
Kerry's fuel regulations would have benefited foreign automakers at the expense of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler............
Kerry's auto regulations would have driven up the cost of SUVs and other light truck models to the point where ...........
Kerry's support for job-killing auto regulations complicates his goal of capitalizing on the loss of manufacturing jobs ..........
........Macomb County has one of the largest Polish populations in the country. The fact that Kerry was disrespectful of Poland's contributions to the war effort will hurt him dearly with Polish voters.
Kerry also alienated Catholics, another critical voting group in Michigan, with his statements on abortion during the debates.....

If I remember correctly the President of Poland was livid at Kerry for his comments. This should have a backlash.

Gay marriage being on the ballot is the biggest factor. 67% support the ban versus 24% oppose it. There are polls that suggest this factor alone will increase voter turnout among Christians by about 20%.

As a citizen of Macomb County I can only say "let's smoke him!"
Very strong Bush Cheney lawn sign presence. F'in will be in Macomb next week. We'll see how the turnout was compared to 15,000 two weeks ago for W.

I'm glad that MI is in play and will continue to work hard to bring the state home. However, the points in your excerpts don't ring true. Remember, Al Gore openly expressed his desire to eliminate, thru legislation, the gas combustion engine. Therefore, the UAW endorsed the candidate that would have destroyed the very industry that employs their memebers.
The UAW worked to have election day off as a holiday, then they endorse the candidate that would eliminate their industry. Stupid is as stupid does.
BTW, I think MI is in play for national security reasons, not the anti-auto industry position of JFnK and all Dems.
Even though I live in northern Michigan, I have many relatives in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area and they tell me that they have never seen so many Bush signs in traditionally Democrat areas. Also, the churches are speaking out about same-sex marriage and thus many people will be voting Republican. Many of my relatives are Catholic and they tell me that more and more Catholics will be voting Republican. That is my prayer.
I think our chances at Michigan are 60/40 in favor of Bush. We have the opposite chance in PA, 40/60, IMHO.

You got it! Dearborn MI is America's Arab magnet and the outstate residents in Michigan know, and fear, this fact.
Sounds like Granholm's tax schemes could sink Kerry. And after Kerry is president we will ALL have even LESS $$ in our pockets. Pretty scary.
This news from MI, and the poll shwoing GWB ahead by 2 in Minn. is very encouraging! I think he can win it even without Ohio.
