The unteachable ignorance of the red states.
Slate ^ | November 4, 2004 | Jane Smiley

I say forget introspection. It's time to be honest about our antagonists. My predecessors in this conversation are thoughtful men, and I honor their ideas, but let's try something else. I grew up in Missouri and most of my family voted for Bush, so I am going to be the one to say it: The election results reflect the decision of the right wing to cultivate and exploit ignorance in the citizenry. I suppose the good news is that 55 million Americans have evaded the ignorance-inducing machine. But 58 million have not. (Well, almost 58 million—my relatives are not ignorant, they are just greedy and full of classic Republican feelings of superiority.)

Ignorance and bloodlust have a long tradition in the United States, especially in the red states. There used to be a kind of hand-to-hand fight on the frontier called a "knock-down-drag-out," where any kind of gouging, biting, or maiming was considered fair. The ancestors of today's red-state voters used to stand around cheering and betting on these fights. When the forces of red and blue encountered one another head-on for the first time in Kansas Territory in 1856, the red forces from Missouri, who had been coveting Indian land across the Missouri River since 1820, entered Kansas and stole the territorial election.

We voted for the president because we're ignorant, evil trailer trash...is that what you get from her rant?

Yeah, and they are trotting out the old "slave power" bloody shirt thing also.

I am all for it. If they want to get in the face of the 58 million majority and call them ignorant, evil, dumb, racist, hatemongers in the hopes that it will make that majority vote for them I say give it a try.

in every one of her novels she disses her Midwestern roots."

It's the first thing that leaps out about almost everything she publishes. Before I finally gave up on A Thousand Acres I wondered if she was ever gonna get over sitting on a corncob as a kid or whatever the hell it was that traumatized her, but then I gave up. Just because the NYTimes Book Review applauds and there are rapes and lots of useless meandering dialogue in a book doesn't make it literature. She seems to be trying to be a depressive Faulkner but she is just angry and depressed and writes books filled with misery because that's like REAL LIFE, man.

Argh don't get me started... ;)

These delusional leftists have seen their world come crashing down around them.
And have been so devastated by their lose on Tues, that we need to allow them this time to vent their frustration and anger.

They are losers and they know it. All they have left is to insult the winners. I feel sorry for them.

I have a Degree from one of the top Women's Colleges in this country and I voted for George W. Bush. Did they fail me? Should I ask for a refund of my $65,000 from the school?

I grew up in Kansas and have lived in Missouri mot of my adult life. I consider this a very offensive article. We should not be villified because we have a moral compass. We are not controlled by our religous leaders.

This is really what we have come to expect from the left. If you don't fit into their box as how they define it you are derided, hated and called unfit. I consider her tirade a confirmation of what I believe about the far left. They are discriminatory to anyone who has an opinion different from their own.

Ignorant if you don't agree with her about tax policy and class envy; even Bill Clinton agreed with Newt Gingrich and took credit for his ideas. This lady is stretching Slate's credibility.

This gal needs to get her medication adjusted.

Or get a life.

Have lived through many elections I have not enjoyed.

But have gotten up the next day and lived my life.

This chick has real problems.

Ya know, it sounds just like my kids. When one does something the other doesn't like, the immediate thoughtless resposne is "you're stupid".

Which leads to "are not...am too...are not..."

A juvenile response from a juvenile party. They need to look inward for the reasons they fell short in this election, rather than simply lashing out at the other side.

Oh yeah: "Are not!"

She seems to forget that before the 1988 election, the Republican states were colored blue (anyone remember the sea from sea to shining sea in 1984?)

So I guess it musta been the dems who invaded Kansas and stole the election.

Wonder how we ever got it back?
