Great place to raise kids. But if you have them(kids) live in one of the smaller cities in E. NE or W. Iowa(Iowa has lower property taxes). Freerepublic E-mail me if you want to know more.

Im not from Omaha, but live in Nebraska. Just stay away from North Omaha. They have a very nice zoo (Henry Dorley Zoo) and there are riverboat casinos just across the border in Iowa. Are you in the Air-Force.

The Omaha Royals (AAA) are better than their Major League affiliate. I am told Omaha has a kick-butt zoo. I live a couple hours south of there, but haven't been there yet.

Was Born and raised 100 miles west of there on a farm. Waco, population 120, if you all the dogs and cats.
I would buy a little land with a nice house out of the city.

Hey! I live a couple of hours from there....Don't go to North Omaha! I must confess I really don't like Omaha except to shop once in awhile, I'm a small town girl. It basically is a friendly town as large towns go, it has lots to do, lots of dinner theater, community theater, one of the best zoos in the nation, you'll only be 50 minutes from Lincoln on the interstate. Lots of shopping....3 or 4 colleges maybe 5 by now. It's only a few hours from KC, gambling close if you like that.

welcome. you will find a friendly, and surprisingly cosmoplitan city. great restaurants (the most per capita in the US)--just got back from a good new small plates fusion restuarant in west O; there are many restaurants for every niche, from sushi to tapas to thai. a good sports town: as mentioned above, the college world series; also, 50 miles down the road is NU football; great college basketball and soccer with creighton university; and good junior and college hockey.
Omaha is pretty conservative, but there is a strong deocratic tone as well. good museums including the joslyn, the durham and the stratcom aviation museums, a world-class zoo, excellent theater, symphony, and opera. one of the indie rock hotbeds of the country, with bands virtually every night at the sokol or other venues. the old market is a great shopping area in downtown, and there are new areas popping up all over. you will be surprised how affluent the city is. email me if you have any specific questions, and welcome to a fellow freeper. [most importantly, nebraska is one of the very few totally red states].

Nice place to raise a family. Very low crime, good schools, good restaurants for a town this size. Good housing is not too steep. Property taxes really suck. World class Zoo, College World Series. If you want more serious urban shopping then Kansas City is a couple hours drive or you can fly to Chicago for about 100 dollars.
No pro sports, except for college football, and the Huskers aren't having a real great year.
Conservative politics reign here. On the downside, we have Hegel for our Senator.
Welcome.

forgot to mention, the crime rate is fairly low, and the schools are excellent, both public and private.

you had to mention chuckie, didn't you. every time i hear hagel's name, my mind's eye flashes to those insipid "chuckie" horror movies. it disgusts me: (1) that he is our senator, and (2) that nelson, despite getting us into the nuclear compact fiasco, and a democrat, is about three times as conservative and effective a senator.
