AR is making the point that we should keep the pressure on, but if I read it correctly the suggested goal is to stop short of overtly forcing Specter off the committee because overtly forcing him off has significant risks.
I'm in some agreement with this. This weakens Specter tremendously and makes it easier to boot him should it become necessary. I think I'd offer two refinements:
1) The RNC will be fundraising soon, or now. Inform them they will get money only after you see how Specter does his job. Tell them Specter is on 6 mos probation and they should watch his behavior because it will determine their fundraising success.
2) Email Frist and inform him that we will tolerate Specter as chairman, but he, personally, is being held responsible for Specter's behavior. If Specter strays, Frist will receive a primary challenge in TN and zero support for a presidential run. Inform him we will watch his judgement in the situation.
Today an activist Judge trashed military justice in a proper setting. Specter is part of the problem, not the solution. When the Dems were in charge, Sphincter went with Kennedy and the Dems. HE SOLD US DOWN THE RIVER.
The GOP is not sealing the borders, doesn't care about unbridled immigration; permits our American culture to go down the toilet by not moderating immigration so the immigrants might assimilate; doesn't undo the Leftists gains; allows jobs to be shipped over seas (Samuelson himself repudiates his own theory)
We do not need the GOP to tell us how to think. We do not need a "Chief", like Jessie Jackson, as the Dems have assigned to their minority captive constituency. We do not need a Pat Robertson to tell us we can get along with Specter; of course he is an expert based on his new book on Activist Judges (hope the money goes to an anti-abortion group, not his pocket). If the US policy is to refuse to deal with terrorists, why should we deal with abortionists who terrorize the defenseless? In SUMMARY, this is a BORK SPECTER NOW thread. If you want to save SPECTER, start another thread.
In my best Reagan voice: There you go again.
Tamsey, when are you going to quit running interference for Specter? Your constant defense of him belies all of your protests to the contrary.
Obviously not or we wouldn't be having this problem now.
Tamsey, we miss you on the PA Board. I guess you decided to campaign for Arlen on the big board, eh ?
I don't think there is a significant risk. I can only see benefits from keeping the heat on Specter. I think we are in a win-win situation no matter what. If we just gave Specter Judiciary Chairman, when he does turns on us, his title and party-affiliation would have carried much weight. But since Specter is being exposed, Specter can just be painted as the liberal abortion activist that he is. I am just not gonna be disappointed if we 'lose', because an important objective has been accomplished. Specter will be weaker and discredited.
Regardless of what happens come Monday, by keeping the pressure on we either knock Specter out of the running altogether or leave him in a politically bloody and weakened position for the chairmanship. Should the second scenario play out, an apropo rules change may surface as a condition to his chairmanship, to which he would have no choice but to meekly agree.
Don't let up on this campaign, however... Keep writing/calling/emailing.
Well... he could huffily agree!

Interesting posts by xzins on another thread:
"Work Teams.
Conservative Christian/Pro-Life/Pro-Family political work teams are saying privately that they will not offer coordinated workers and staffing for republicans supporting Specter.
Work teams are worth untold millions of dollars to politicians.
Political suicide to oppose.

I'm hearing it from all over.
They fight for judicial appointments or they get no workers.
Period.
Judiciary is THE ISSUE that has caused the Pro-Life/Pro-Family/Pro-God/Pro-Guns groups to pour their hearts into Repub campaigns for 2 decades now.
And now it's close. Cross them now and lose them forever.

I read that exact post earlier in the day. If true, that's enormously encouraging. It's like an informal union, only this time united by values for the purpose of righteousness and justice instead of greed.
