Setback to US image in war

CAIRO – The killing of a wounded and apparently unarmed Iraqi by a US marine, videotaped by an embedded reporter from NBC on Saturday and broadcast around the world, is stirring anger in the Middle East and elsewhere. That anger, reminiscent of the outcry that followed the release of torture photos from Abu Ghraib prison, is the latest upsurge in a propaganda war that the US has been embroiled in from the get-go in Iraq. US officials say an investigation has begun.

The act itself, perhaps a result of the fog of war, perhaps an act of revenge, represents a key challenge for the Marines. Keenly aware that US excesses in the past have turned global opinion against the war in Iraq, and thereby threatened US strategic objectives, commanders repeatedly have warned their subordinates not to shoot unarmed or seriously injured men.

Do you really think he was playing to the camera???

I certainly didn't suspect that from hearing the audio, seeing the unedited version of the tape on the internet, and the background information concerning the Marine and previous days events. The young man sounded scared to me.

Evidently I missed something...perhaps he passed his own handheld camera to the reporter and asked him to film him while he reenacted the scene?

Setback my eye.

Whenever the leftist media calls something a "setback" one can be assured that it was precisely the opposite.

You know what? Puck the Arab back alley, let them cower in fear, it's all the Islamic Arabs ever understood.

I did not see the internet version. His reaction seemed forced to me, though. To me, the guy looked like he was already dead. And the "there, now he's dead," seemed gratuitous.

And Kevin Sites should get his and quick ...that anti-American B*tch.

Define "get his."

Whatever the marines deem appropriate, how about that Chicken Hawk armchair quarterback?

Actually it should be a setback for the old network. They have long lost their credibility.

Which "Chicken Hawk armchair quarterback?"

From what you're saying, you have reason to believe that the Marine was wrong and wish to hide that fact, or retaliate against the person exposing it.

Evil seeks to hide and retaliate when its deeds are shown to the world; good doesn't give a flying damn whether its deeds are exposed.

Well, why don't you go to Fallujah and we'll see what you do? What I detect from you is moral equivalency, blindness to history and a detachment from reality.

You don't know what you're talking about. You've never been in their combat boots. I'd appreciate it if you would laid off the marine.

The West in general seems to adopt the philosophy that repayment cannot be made in coin minted by the terrorists or whoever because it would be "descending to their level". It has always seemed flawed to me, this supposition that we should "know better". That can be interpreted by the enemy only as a weakness to be exploited at every opportunity.
I'm so desperately sorry to hear of the "anger in the Arab world". It seems highly selective in causes for its indignation. What of the recent so-called "executions" of innocents - even aid workers? Going back, the Arab world didn't go puce-faced when Saddam Hussein was threatening it at the Arab Summit prior to the Gulf War, demanding billions of dollars for fighting what he called "their war" against Iran! (That was when he boasted of his "Al- Kimawi al Muzdawaj" - chemical arsenal.) Was there a tide of outrage shortly afterwards when he rammed home his threat by sending a Boeing to Cairo? Unexpected, the airliner landed carrying the bodies of Egyptians working in Iraq who had been tortured, shot and flown home.)

It would depend on the situation; but if I thought I was righteous, I would not threaten retaliation against those showing me doing the deed.

Righteous deeds require no defense; exposing them does not warrant retaliation.

What I detect from you is moral equivalency, blindness to history and a detachment from reality.

I'm not the one going around saying that the Marine Corps should retaliate against the media for airing a videotape they didn't like.

You don't know what you're talking about. You've never been in their combat boots.

Actually, I was, once upon a time. The USMC asked some questions about my conduct; I answered them.

I'd appreciate it if you would laid off the marine.

There's an investigation underway. If the deed was legit, that'll be the end of it. If it wasn't, he'll pay the piper.

Perhaps he was verbally reassuring himself? the others? Background information that's been going around on the threads today mentioned that they had experienced or knew of an incident that recently occurred with a rigged body or dying terrorist, where a marine was killed. That may account for his belief that the man was still breathing and posed a threat due to lack of surrender.

I just don't know, I've never been in a situation like that before, having to process multiple variables and influences and make a determination of taking a life. For right now, I'll consider him innocent until prov en guilty. Unlike the POS reporter, he is guilty through and through of base opportunism.

Even if he's guilty, it's not a big deal. Have his commanding officer give him a verbal shakedown and send him back into the field.

I'll cut him some slack since he has been deep in the $hit over there for who knows how long. I thought his comment was pretty cool. Kinda like something a Bronson or Eastwood character would say. But this guy is a real life bad a$$. IMO he treated that terrorist with the respect he DESERVED.
