It's sure good to know that all of the economic and other assistance, provided by the US, has gone to good use...

Lots of people think Russia is no longer a threat to the US. In my mind Russia wouldn't be doing this unless she plans on using it against us one day. Like you said, this is the BIG guns and definite overkill for a group of terrorists.

While Star Wars in its current iteration may be a marginal (read: unsastisfactory) solution, the age of the ICBM as a viable nuclear delivery method is coming to an end.

While targetting may be upgraded as well as lift capacity over current delivery vehicles, it is still 1960's technology.

Boost-phase ICBM targetting and neutralization has been in research since Reagan, and the Russians simply cannot afford to run with the U.S. pack anymore in an arms race.

If it's perceived to be a major threat, we can rest assured measures will be taken to minimize it.

I tend to think that both Russia and the USA had better start watching China more closely, not each other.

... or China. They might have to defend Siberia sometime in the next generation.

Hmmm. X-43A flies mach 10 without an on-board oxidizer, and the next day Putin has a new missile.

Could it be that the USAF has plans for offsetting the saved weight of fuel in a scramjet delivery vehicle?

We wasted $30 billion on that stupid space station with the Russkis while illegals flood in and Al Qeada was renting cars and planning 9-11.

Putin should worry about the IslamoFacists who shot 350 Russian children in the back at a Christian school.

The Soviet SS-18 had 20 warheads of 1 megaton each. I don't recall how many our big missiles had, but it wasn't nearly as many, maybe 3 or 5. We haven't had to worry about this stuff for a while, and I don't think we have to worry about Russia now, either. If the Russians are developing something that makes them feel safer, it's for internal consumption.

Wouldn't it be a sorry surprise if one day we discovered that Russia has been planning to destroy us all along - but they've been waiting for just the right timing?

Yeah, the same 60's technology that landed us on the moon.

I don't mean to be flip, but your logic is...well...illogical. A defense system can work against rogue missiles from terrorists and accidental launches, and we need it...but it is useless against this "60's technology" that can quite nicely erase us from the planet earth. And it will remain useless against an all-out overwhelming nuclear attack...in our lifetimes and maybe even in our children's lifetimes..

Methinks you have too much faith in "modern" technology. And many here have way too much faith in the charity of the Russians!

Russia Says Weapon Renders 'Missile Defense Useless'

NewsMax.com Wires
Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004

MOSCOW – Russia has successfully tested a hypersonic weapon capable of penetrating any prospective missile shield, a senior general said Thursday. The prototype weapon proved it could maneuver so quickly as to make "any missile defense useless," Col.-Gen. Yuri Baluyevsky, the first deputy chief of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces, said at a news conference.

He said that the prototype of a new hypersonic vehicle had proved its ability to maneuver while in orbit, thereby making it able to to dodge an enemy's missile shield.

"The flying vehicle changed both the altitude and direction of its flight," Baluyevsky said. "During the experiment conducted yesterday, we proved that it's possible to develop weapons that would make any missile defense useless."

Baluyevsky's comment followed a statement by President Vladimir Putin, who said Wednesday after attending rocket launches from the Plesetsk launch pad in northern Russia that experiments conducted during the military maneuvers had proven that Russia could build strategic weapons unrivaled in the world. ...

How about for a nation of 1.6 billion that claims half of Russia and whom our Free Trade nightmare is building into a world superpower? By the way, they fear that with a US missile shield, the US will attack Russia. And why not, Hitlery has a pretty good chance of being elected.

The Russians are our friends. The cold war is over. These are defensive missiles only. What's the problem?
