My first thought exactly! Maybe Senator Kovak.
What the hell did he join for?

Do a google search on this guy and his mother "anti-war activist" Fran Johns and then tell me why I care what he thinks after his 6 months of service.

Sounds like another guy who hopes to build a political career out of a very abbreviated "military career."

Of course they are, VVAW started this group as well (they are still around, part of Kerry's band, Joe Bangert especially). I couldn't believe they were still at it, the websites are connected.

"Tim McVeigh wasn't a pacifist either. He was also disturbed about a war in Iraq."

The same can be said for Saddam, and bin Laden, and Zarqawi, and the Iranian mullahs, and Kim Jong-Il if memory serves.

His mommy is a 60's retread, the nut doesn't fall far from the tree.

Sounds like he rebelled against this self-avowed lakefront liberal by joining the Marines.

Then when he actually had to serve he ran back to mommy.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Out of sheer morbid curiosity, what exactly have you done to support the war effort there Doe Eyes? Huh? I'd love to hear all about it. Bring me some proof too. This guy (however misguided he might be now) actually put his ass on the line and fought in it. The way I see it, he earned 100 points. Every time he opens his soup cooler to spout off against the war, he loses a few points. Something tells me that he still has more points than you. Pardon me if I seem a little trigger happy with you. I guess you could say that Marines tend to circle the wagons when one of our own is publicly attacked, regardless of the reasoning. That's pretty much what you're proposing. So put up your credentials or shut your piehole...respectfully of course.

Former U.S. Marine Sgt. Rob Sarra, a member of Iraq Veterans against the War, speaks to a capacity crowd at the University of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Hall Tuesday. Another speaker talks about Iraq. See Local.
Tribune Photo/GENE KAISER

When he was assigned to head back in the fall of 2003, he said he couldn't do it and soon his nine-year career as a Marine was over. He was honorably discharged in April.

Nine years and he was only a Sergeant? If you aren't selected for SSgt after eight years the Corps s***cans your a**. Somebody needs to check this turds' SRB.

It's 12 years. Average time in service at time of promotion to SSGT is around 10. You don't know what you're talking about.

I work for a US Defense Contractor and was in theater shortly after 9/11 providing support to our effort in Afghanistan. Can't say much more than that. As an American, I also pay a rather large part of my income in support of our Government, which includes our military.

Ohhhh, I see. A "defense contractor" at an undisclosed location. It's a "need to know" thing, right? Pardon me while I totally disregard that line.

Pay taxes? I can find plenty of anti-war lefties who do that. They, along with most so called military supporters wouldn't bother to do that if the Feds didn't figuratively confiscate them at gunpoint. You call that supporting the war?

I don't want to argue about it. I hope you got my point.

You don't know what you're talking about.

Actually, after getting confirmation via telephone from DC, the policy changed in October of 2001. Prior to that "up or out" was ~eight years. Marine Sergeants may now re-enlist up to their service limit of 13 years if they have a recommendation for re-enlistment from their commanding officer and meet all re-enlistment standards, with MMEA having final authority, according to Marine Administrative Message 313/01.

Your claim of 12 years, although closer than my recollection of the previous limit of eight, is incorrect and if one is a s***bird they will still be s***canned. If you're still a Sergeant after 12 years, or even nine years, you're a s***bird. This turds' SRB still needs to be looked at.

When ECFCS was implemented in 1985 the service limits were as follows:

SGT................4 YEARS
SSGT...............8.5 YEARS
GYSGT..............13 YEARS
1STSGT/MSGT........17.5 YEARS
SGTMAJ/MGYSGT......22 YEARS

Current service limits are as follows:

CPL.............8 YEARS
SGT.............13 YEARS
SSGT............20 YEARS
GYSGT...........22 YEARS
1STSGT/MSGT.....27 YEARS
SGTMAJ/MGYSGT...30 YEARS

These limits will be canceled on 30 September 2005 IAW MCBUL 5314.

I guess I served with a lot of "turds" then, because I only know one or two guys, out of hundreds, who made Staff before hitting the 8 year mark. 10 year Sergeants are fairly common in the Marine Corps. Maybe you were just in a fast promoting field.

How many 10 year Sergeants did you serve with who had successful tours in a "B" billet?
