HOW scary that we've bred - or imported - so many people so angered by Christmas that we no longer dare use the word in public. But why do we cave in to them so easily?

Last year, for example, Stonnington Council dropped the word "Christmas" from its Christmas celebrations and even banned a minister from quoting the Bible while speaking at a carols night. Why? Would he have provoked some enraged carol singer to attack him?

This year a Deer Park childcare centre scrapped its usual Christmas party, replacing it with an "inclusive" fairytale one.

My city retitled "Christmas on the Prado" as "December Nights."

I am an urban Catholic from Chicago. For many years in the 70s and 80s I said Happy Holidays to friends and sent out Happy Holiday cards. I had many Jewish friends and I wanted to be inclusive. No more. My Jewish friends say to me, "Merry Christmas" and I say to them, "Happy Chanukah." I am happy to give a greeting that has religious signficance to me or to the friend or to both. But I no longer worry about "offending" someone by mistake. My beliefs are my beliefs and if my friend or even a stranger cannot understand that I mean a friendly greeting in the context of my religion, then they are just probably looking to be insulted to make some point they want to make. No reasonable person in Australia or the USA or UK or Canada should be offended by the greeting "Merry Christmas" when it is offered in friendship and good will. For all of you who are not Americans looking at Free Republic, we have our own holiday of thanks this week endorsed by many religions in our country. From all of us, "Happy Thanksgiving."

Call me a cynic but "follow the money".

OK, you're a cynic. If you mean to imply there is no such thing as a religious holiday without reference to shopping and commercialism, then I will be happy to show you parts of the country where the religious significance of Christmas is still central to the celebration. But if I want to spend my money on a few gifts for relatives, that is my business. If you want to be shocked, look at how much money is spent every year on Halloween costumes for adults--more than is spent for children. Follow the money on that one.

Welcome to freeruplic. I don't think you need to excerpt this piece. Have mercy on us dial-up people. We are human beans too!

They must think "Santa" is a secular cartoon. Santa Claus is another name for Saint Nicholas--a saint recognized by several Christian sects and the Roman Catholic Church. So the secularists better get to work getting rid of Santa too.

when the government tries to contol what the ministers say, then it's all over.

No,no,no...I didn't mean that at all. In fact, I didn't even think along that line.

No, my friend, what I meant by "follow the money" was that of all those who profess to be outraged/insulted/distressed/what-have-you by Christmas displays, references, etc. dollars to donuts say that maybe around 1-2% (if that many) are motivated by genuine religious feelings.

The rest of the outraged do so, IMHO, because, well, "follow the money". They do so for some kind of tangible reward; either in the now or sometime in the future; either by a direct route or a very winding road, with "money" being either actual cash, or something even better than cash -- power.

That's what I meant when I wrote, "Follow the money", and I apologized if I stepped on any toes.
