I was at a taping of "Frasier," a show by the same producers. They didn't hold up any laugh signs, no lights went on, nor was any artificial impetus to laugh provided. Breaking news, some shows are actually are funny.
To people with a sense of humor, that is.

"Frasier (Kelsey Grammar) probably came out of Cheers the best. Hit spin off show and a Republican supporter."
I think I would have to say Woody Harrelson came out the best, but also the most liberal.
WHY???

The truth is as a recovering alcoholic, it's had for me to find humor in a bunch of drunks hanging out in a bar ~ I did it for too many years. :)
Also ~ I like hour long TV shows like JAG, NCIS and CSI.
Those are the only network shows I watch except for sports, Speed Channel is my favorite sports channel.

I guess it started when he came off his 2 year army service and found his wife 'with' his best friend...and even though they had a baby, they divorced. Then he was in a bad car accident where his other friend died in his arms. Both of these things happened within a year...around 22-23 years old. After that, he withdrew and went on the anti-depressant drugs...he was never able to hold a job and lived with his mom ever since. He tried to work and even took some mechanix courses and was temporatily employed with the city as a trainee or something. That lasted 2 months. I just found out that for the 2 weeks before he killed himself he stopped taking his medication. He hated it. She says she even went to his Dr. and pleaded with him to help her son. He had Bi-Polar the Dr. said.
Well..he took her gun and was missing for 10 days till they found his body.
MY point is...I believe it was the drugs that ruined his life. He was a normal kid put on drugs to handle some traumatic situations and was never taken off for 15 years. The letdown or withdrawal was obviously strong.

Gotcha. Actually, you might like this show, it won about a bajillion Emmy awards. Sam, the bartender, was a recovering alcoholic who never touched the stuff. Great ensemble cast, terrific storylines, and lots of laughs. The bar was really just the setting, it was more about friendship than anything. "You wanna be where everybody knows your naaaaame..."
Peace.

Best of luck to Shelley. She obviously hs a long road ahead of her.
I concur with the posts describing depression. (Yup, me too.) What goes through a depressive's mind at the very depths, is a never-ending feeling of anguish and helplessness, and the thought that you are worthless and just a miserable burden on everyone and everything around you. In this condition, the depressive thinks he/she is actually doing his/her daughter (whomever) a favor by committing suicide. These thoughts whirl around as a way out is sought, but it's just not psychologically possible for the severely depressed person to do it for himself.
It took several years for my psychiatrist to experiment with the many drug alternatives available until the right combo was found. Voila! Effen MAGIC! But it doesn't work the same for everyone.
So, cut Shelley some slack on this. It was out of her control.

Gary Sinise does an incredible Texas accent, though.

The way out is prayers and helping out someone who is worse off....which is all around. Clinical depression is an illness.
Of course, some people believe the only way to treat illnesss is prayer. I don't agree with those people.

A person I knew killed themself because their significant relation broke up with them so it was the suiciders way of putting the final ever lasting guilt trip on the survivor(s).Is that what the person told you?

I remember those commercials.

That's bullsh**t. He had 15 years to get help. Sounds like it was the drugs that kept him alive. He stopped taking the drugs by his own decision, so how was that the Dr.'s OR the drugs fault?

I am, not blaming the Dr. because I don't know his story. But drugs make people dependent. He should of never been on them in the first place. Just like the little kids today...they put them on drugs and cause more problems instead of just letting them work it out without drugs... like most of us.

This was no "suicide" attempt. Suicide is what that dude did who jumped off the Empire State Builing the other day. Shelley Long took just enough pills to OD. Probably a play for sympathy. You know, "somebody care about me".
