How To Speed Up Firefox (Helpful Vanity)

Posted on 12/12/2004 12:45:50 PM PST by KoRn

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

You a fortunate (that you like dial-up)Many of us got fed up with overloaded servers and being dumped-off while on dial-up. 2 1/2 years now on DSL- never a problem! I have had my actual phone line go dead in a storm, but the DSL stayed up & running.

At one time, whenever one googled Firefox, this thread was linked on the first page of the search results. I'm not sure where it is now. Happy ebaying. lol

"WORKS! Thanks!"

Glad to see it still helps folks from time to time. Ironically, I built a new machine last year and neglected to do these config changes. I didn't realize it until you posted to me. LOL!

It makes sense because the pipelining allows for multiple concurrent outstanding blocking requests. Thanks for the info.

Thanks, KoRn; I had done this on my ME a few years back and forgot about if on my new XP — it does speed things up nicely.

"Any hints for Safari?"

None that I immediately know of. Try googling the settings I posted about with "Safari" as one of the search terms. That would be a place to start anyway.

"Does it works in firefox 3 too?"

Yes it certainly does. I believe they have some of the settings enabled by default now.

when I do the following:
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

I set it to 0, restart Firefox, only to find it has changed it back to 600. Will not keep the user setting.

I just updated FF, and thought of these settings.

I made these adjustments, and they still make a HUGE difference with regard to loading pages faster!
