How To Speed Up Firefox (Helpful Vanity)

Posted on 12/12/2004 12:45:50 PM PST by KoRn

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

You're welcome. I assumed it was in the Control Panel mouse settings. :) My folks have a Logitech optical mouse and I had set up their side buttons for them.

I use another browser (Fastbrowser) that has 'computer' voice capabilities. It is good for reading lengthy news articles to the viewer.

FireFox now has a similar capability. The extension is called FoxyVoice.

That makes FireFox a very good candidate for anyone who is visually impaired or who likes to listen, rather than read, lengthy articles.

It may also depend on your ISP connection.

This is true if one were on dialup. Too many connections, and the browser either slows down or worse yet, locks up. The max connections setting set at 30 means one connection is for retrieving the page, and the other 29 connections are used to grab the graphics (29 at a time).

Thanks.

You might also want to look at moox's optimzed Firefox & Thunderbird builds. Using the Athlon XP one here on a laptop since last night. No problems yet. I did keep the official release.

For some reason, it works fine in the default settings for IE. For Firefox, you have to use Alt-left and Alt-right to back and forward. Fortunately, the new config still works with IE.

Thank You - Worked for my setup. Firefox seemed to load images a bit slower than IE - not anymore.

That's weird. The forward and back buttons on my MS mouse work the same in Firefox as they do in IE. The Alt-Left and Alt-Right are a good substitute though.

I had already down loaded the "tweak network settings"extension. So most of the vaules had been adjusted. The time delay to "0" did help.

Thanks.

I agree totally. I think I've opened IE like twice since I installed Firefox. These tweaks just simply make the best even better!
