UN's Jan Egeland Responds to Freeper Email
Free Republic ^ | December 28, 2004

Posted on 12/28/2004 4:11:38 PM PST by Howlin

Earlier today, responding to these remarks by the UN's Jan Egeland

But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.

"It is beyond me why are we so stingy, really," the Norwegian-born U.N. official told reporters. "Christmastime should remind many Western countries at least, [of] how rich we have become."

"There are several donors who are less generous than before in a growing world economy," he said, adding that politicians in the United States and Europe "believe that they are really burdening the taxpayers too much, and the taxpayers want to give less. It's not true. They want to give more."

I sent this email to Jan Egeland

You seem to be under the impression that the ONLY way that individuals can donate money to charities and disasters is if the government TAKES the money from them in the form of taxes and gives it to YOU.

Leaving aside the fact that the UN is the last place I want MY government to give money (see Oil for Food scandal), we don't need to be taxed into giving. The United States is a generous country and we WILL give a lot of money to this cause; we're just not going to give it to YOU to spend as you see fit.

The people who really need and deserve the money will get it, without you having the opportunity to cut your slice off of it.

Howlin @ FR

P.S. Forget about a UN and/or world tax; it's not going to happen.

And being such, I'm sure she's accustomed to dumb men who then later corrected their mistake and apologized.

It's NOT a problem; I'm use to people thinking I'm a guy; I guess I'm just a mean, nasty poster......LOL.

You certainly are NOT dumb.

i'm surprised that he even contacted you. you know, he's up there, and we're down here.

um...i think the u.n. dislikes the united states because of 2 things:

1. our religions
2. the u.s. constitution

americans will interfere with the u.n. grab for a global tax and government.

Good for you howlin. It's obvious he's been backtracking from his earlier statements and I'm glad you called him on that, too.

no doubt for another opportunity to slam the US.

Precisely. Bodies are still swelling on the beach and they are already yapping at Bush's heels.

Somebody even put up a post about the first remarks on CNN yesterday, but I can't find it.

Yeah, I was quoting Sammon from the Gibson Factor earlier, when he was talking about the mask sliding off.
The greedy bas*ards will take anyone's money, but we have the most to give, so we are the ones who get the Rhevrhuund Jacksuhnn-style shakedown.
Which reminds me, shouldn't their email domain be a dot com instead of a dot org? I thought dot orgs were for "not for profit organizations"...

Who exactly were you referring to when you said "stingy," if not the United States and other nations?

Jan's comment was aimed directly at the USA!

UN Under Secretary Jan Egeland specifically berated those giving .01 or .02 percent. The US gives .013% of GDP. Of course that's .013% of a $10 trillion economy.

UN thug Jan Egeland is lying and spinning like ol' Bill Clinton in his prime.

The only reply to my messages to the UN is a note that Stephanie Bunker, one of Jan's assistants, in out of the office until the 29th.

These diplomat types are so used to dealing with each other in careful language, that when they get something that cuts the s*** out --- they don't know what to say!! They forget that the US is made of real people who can speak for themselves----and do!!

Your E-mail and follow-up was PERFECT! LOLOL!

The UN keeps stepping in it, and they just don't get it!

Yes. The American people are over-taxed. Their taxes should be reduced.

I bet they use the almanac and look up GDP for every country and figure out how much they are "owed."

When I was a child and the school handed out those containers for UNICEF,I refused to even take one! I knew, even as a little girl, that this was an EVIL organization and would NOT do anything to support it!

That's what I was thinking when he "referred" me to the press conference at the Crawford White House.

He assumes the "government" speaks for the people. I felt like he was telling me, "Excuse me, but this is your government's official policy today, so what's the fuss about."

Socialists just don't get it, do they?

The UN is trying to put the Red Cross and Salvation Army out of the "business" of humanitarian aid. They consider them competitors.

Scum sucking cretins.

What exactly is the tax rate in Norway ......and how much of their GNP do they donate to the UN?

LOL. I can't do that much research...I have to cook supper.

I did look a little and found that the GDP per capita in Norway is $41,974 and here in the U.S. it is $37,777 (2002 stats). I have no idea how much they pay in dues to the U.N. There are separate funds for different projects. They are not in the top ten for the general fund, though.

Nice, succinct Broadside attack there.
I want you on my right flank.

Gotta love "The Washington Times". They get it fast. And they get it right!
