UN's Jan Egeland Responds to Freeper Email
Free Republic ^ | December 28, 2004

Posted on 12/28/2004 4:11:38 PM PST by Howlin

Earlier today, responding to these remarks by the UN's Jan Egeland

But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.

"It is beyond me why are we so stingy, really," the Norwegian-born U.N. official told reporters. "Christmastime should remind many Western countries at least, [of] how rich we have become."

"There are several donors who are less generous than before in a growing world economy," he said, adding that politicians in the United States and Europe "believe that they are really burdening the taxpayers too much, and the taxpayers want to give less. It's not true. They want to give more."

I sent this email to Jan Egeland

You seem to be under the impression that the ONLY way that individuals can donate money to charities and disasters is if the government TAKES the money from them in the form of taxes and gives it to YOU.

Leaving aside the fact that the UN is the last place I want MY government to give money (see Oil for Food scandal), we don't need to be taxed into giving. The United States is a generous country and we WILL give a lot of money to this cause; we're just not going to give it to YOU to spend as you see fit.

The people who really need and deserve the money will get it, without you having the opportunity to cut your slice off of it.

Howlin @ FR

P.S. Forget about a UN and/or world tax; it's not going to happen.

As you may know, I lost my soulmate in April and this Christmas Day my mother was taken to the ER and we were told later that she would have been dead within 2 hours. She is still in the hospital as I write this. I just got home and I have been in lurk mode for awhile as I try to absorb all that has happened this year...however, I just loved your emails and had to let you know!

Well, I am sorry to hear all that, especially at this time of year; it's hard to celebrate the holidays when some people aren't there, isn't it?

But I wanted you to know you were missed; and I will put you in my prayers starting tonight.

Did you notice that the twit said, "It's my job to be dissatisfied"?

His JOB? Your caustic email let him know that WE are DISSATISFIED with HIM and the "job" he's doing.

OTOH, you're doing a Great Job, Howlin!

"i see children not getting medical help because we have too little funds, in the u.n., in the red cross, in organizations."

Perhaps Jan should have the UN cough up the money they've stolen for the Oil for Food Program. I'm sure that would totally offset all the moneys needed to help these folks who have been so devastated. God bless their souls.

you inspired me, just sent this:

Mr Egeland,

We, the people of the United States of America, live in a free representative republic. That means that we are free to think for ourselves, unlike those who live in, say, a socialist society. We are very wealthy as a nation and are also very generous precisely because of our freedom.

When you force someone to give money it is not charity, but coercion or robbery. In the United States of America our ancestors fought against taxation without representation; this means, Mr Egeland, that the likes of you can not force us to give you money. We will give, and we will give significantly, because we are a good people, not because you have ordered us to.

By the way, your comments about generosity are laughable in light of the Oil for Food Scandal. How many billions of dollars did the "generous" leaders of the United Nations siphon away from the needy people of Iraq? Kofi Annan can have his son reap a tremendous fortune at the expense of the Iraqi community, and the organization that fails to expel him, and fails to even cooperate in the investigation of his pilferings,
dares to criticize America's generosity? People in glass houses, most especially huge, vile, corrupt, glass houses in New York City should not throw stones.

Now there is somebody on Fox saying that if only we hadn't gone to war in Iraq, we could have given THAT money to the victims of the tsunami.

When I was a child and the school handed out those containers for UNICEF,I refused to even take one! I knew, even as a little girl, that this was an EVIL organization and would NOT do anything to support it!

I was eight (1979). My idea of "world politics" was whether my best friend and I were fighting or not. Besides, the cardboard boxes they handed out was covered with photos of starving children along with a tract that said they didn't even have clean water to drink. To an eight year old, that's a pretty powerful message.

Thank you for the prayers, Howlin. And I know that you KNOW how it feels to have a loved one missing. I hope 2005 is a better year. Sometimes I feel like I'm drowning - my mom is on a downward spiral from here on out - it's hard to watch. God bless you!!
