To hear the media talk one almost gets the impression that Fallujah is a small town in Iraq~ when you look at this high resolution satellite image of Fallujah you get a real sense of what the Coalition Forces are up against in trying to secure this city:
Fallujah ~ Image Collected November 5, 2004

Over the years I heard many references to the tent city of Mina in Saudi Arabia. Mina is the city where Muslim pilgrims reside before heading to nearby Mount Arafat at dawn for the climax of the annual hajj. It wasn't until I looked at this QuickBird image of Mina that I grasped what this tent city was actually like:
Mina

and this image of the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu (on the lower right) took my breath away:
Inca, Peru

There are many other incredible satellite images on the Digital Globe web site ~ it is well worth a visit and probably a bookmark as well!

Oh, two last images that I think are just plain cool:
A Corn Maze salute to our troops and The Boneyard, Davis-Monthan AFB

Wow! I didn't see what you meant about the Incan ruins until I magnified them. Awesome!

Amazing shots, expecially those of the ocean receding from the beach. I realize now why many people stood on the beach, mesmerized by what they saw.

Fascinating stuff in that boneyard pic ... whole lotta P3s, and a lonely little (well, not really so little) RB-57 sitting there ...

I saw the RB-57 sitting there.

Think they'd mind if we borrowed it, and fixed it up?

They were active out at Malmstrom AFB, in Montana, when I was stationed there in the 70's.

NASA still flies a couple of them ... I'm no pilot, but I'd be happy to sit in the back and run the sensors!

And this is just one small section of one beach. There are hundreds of other beaches with similar 'debris' throughout the area. It is unimaginable.

Take another look ... there's an early model B-57, with the dinky trapeziodal wings, to the right of the RB-57.

I noticed a bunch of what looked to be fairly good size planes set out in pieces.......toward the right side of the screen, I think. Do they use these "bones" for spare parts or something?

The boneyard can be a source of spare parts, for aircraft still operating but long out of production.
