ACEH / North Sumatera, Indonesia

Aceh has been closed to westerners for several years now due to the off and on fighting which has been going on for the last 24 years. A large group of Acehnese want independence from Indonesia to become their own Independent Islamic State. Since 1989, over 2000 deaths have occurred between the Indonesian Military and the Free Ache Movement forces and thousands of others have turned up missing.

Although there hasn't been any news of the separatist groups in Banda Aceh causing problems, we see in Sri Lanka, the Tamil Tiger rebels, have established a virtual clampdown on the northern and eastern regions of the country, hampering aid distribution. Residents have been warned to stick to only the few major roads that leaders are trying to secure. No one can enter without going through rebel checkpoints.

As the days go on in this aid effort, the attitude of the separatists in Aceh may go sour and the many foreigners in Ache will be soft targets for opportunist separatists.

In Aceh, not many Christians are known to live. We don't have any reliable news or contacts to them yet, because of the difficult situation. We will send you an update as soon as we know more!

Keep on praying for the Aceh survivors - may the Lord use this situation to turn their hearts to HIM, who is the one and only way to God.

SRI LANKA (CEYLON)

Some of you would have got my previous letter expressing the plight of the some of the churches which were affected on the account of torrential rain. No sooner have I sent the same than hit the tidal waves. All the coastal areas are affected very very badly. Aftermath of this huge tidal wave destruction is indescribable - horrible and terrible. Many Christian families have lost their family members. Many survived because they came to worship service.

BATIICALOA and AMPARA DISTRICTS

Most affected areas are these. More than 2000 died of submergence of water. Pathetically majority is babies, children and women who could not resist the huge tidal waves. Still dead bodies are being recovered. Everywhere crying and weeping could hear. There is no space in the hospital mortuary.

Batticalo church - Brothers Kanadasamy and Maniccam's houses were severely damaged. No use for residing at all. Latter's completely gone. 3-4 families are staying in the church building. They need food and cloths. We try our maximum to help. But we are unable to help many. Please pray.

Verugal/ Valaithottam churches - Untill now I do not know the condition of the two workers (Brothers Mahenthiran with 6 children and Lincon (two children), and 30-40 families. No communication and no transport so far. Please pray. Worst affected areas are theirs. Waves roared up to 30' height. Once we reach them we have to do enormous help to them from zero - food to shelter. As I informed they were already affected because of flood. And this disaster happened to worsen the situation. I will update their situation once I hear from them God wiling.

Kalkuda church - One of our workers Brother Sivabaln's daughter-in-law and grand child were swept away by tidal waves and only mother's body was found and buried. It happened while they were conducting the worship service in his house. His house was razed to the ground. Only foundation remains while his motor bike (45,000 Rs.) cycle was swept away and no more. Another worker

Mullaitivu (Alampil/Mrippu Churches) - Brother Sam and family are safe. But He lost some believers. In Brother Samy's family itself 11 members except himself were washed away by the waves. So far none of their bodies were found. He lost everyone and everything! Some families are staying in the school and public buildings.

Apart from this, wives and children of Christian's pastors and workers also were swept away - some before their own eyes. Very pathetic and miserable situation is prevalent here. 140 children reared by Tamil Tigers (= Tamil liberation Army) are swept away by tidal waves leaving none in the home. South also was very severely affected. Many died and many lost homes and properties."

So far for today,

Please, keep on praying! Name Withheld
